Post subject:  Ignition charge light not coming on

Hi all,

Been a while since i posted here!

I've got an issue with my car at the moment and was wondering if it was something simple that i'm missing or if my alternator is stuffed.

I replaced the alternator a couple of months ago with a new 45amp unit (the one Mini Kingdom Online sells) and it was working fine for a little while but then the charge light just stopped coming on before starting the car.

I've removed the charge light wire from the terminal on the alternator and earthed it to the body and it lights up fine when the ignition is set to the on position, so i know the wiring / bulb are ok. I've tried earting the body of the alternator to the same point on the body, still no go. Is there anything else i can check or is it just a case of need another new alternator?

Cheers

Is it charging the battery when running? (13.8-14.2 V, I think?)

Which terminal on the alternator have you connected the sensing wire to? If it's connected to the charge circuit the light won't come on.

Sorry should have clarified... battery not charging (no voltage change when engine running) and there is only one way it can be connected - small connector on the IGN terminal and 2 x big connectors to the solenoid (same connector, just has 2 posts)

This is the type of connector my alternator has

Does sound like it’s failed unfortunately.. see if you can get an auto electrician to spin it up and test it or send it back?

Yeah that's what I suspected. My car seems to keep killing them. Could it be high rpm that is killing them, or not related?

Hi Chux,

I hope you understand that if there is a problem with anything!! I sell to you, or anyone else
If there is a genuine problem with what I have sold, I am happy to Repair Re place or refund .

I do want all my transactions to be fair to both sides, and I am happy to listen to anyone who
wants to talk to me about any problem they have, be it with my products myself or any other issue.

I do not always get it right but as I am getting older and I know my chances of making mistakes
have increased over the years. However I believe I always treat people in a fair manner

Hi John,

Apologies if this post came across as though I was looking for justification to get a replacement part from you, my intentions were in fact the complete opposite.

I wanted to make sure that I'd checked everything I could at my end and to be as sure as i could be that the problem was indeed a failed unit before I even contacted you. Parts fail sometimes and that's fine but I didn't want to ask for a replacement unit only to fit it up and still have the same issue. That's not fair for you to wear the cost of replacing a part that hasn't actually failed!

You've always looked after my dad (Terry with the moke) and I, replacing parts no questions asked and offering great advice whenever needed.

Once again, apologies if this post came across the wrong way.

Chux - pretty sure that wasn't what John meant so I don't think there's a need to apologise. I mentioned your problem to him today so that's probably the reason for his post, to simply ensure you know he will fix it if it turns out to be the alternator.

Hi Chux
About time you got a bigger pulley to slow the alternator down or lower the revs by 2000  or you'll just keep bustin them

Cheers GR, this is the sort of thing i was concerned about. I don't have a very heavy load on the electrical system (no stereo or anything like that) so a bigger pulley would be fine i think.
