Hi guys, this looks to me to be gray cast iron based on what I've seen. But thought I'd ask the brains trust your opinion!

I was hoping it is cast steel to make it easier to weld, but I suspect cast iron is the go unfortunately - whaddaya reckon?

Grey cast iron. Welded plenty over the years.
Stick weld it with nickel electrode. Cigweld castcraft 100.

Sweet thanks doc :) I was going to use my MIG but my father in law has stick, so I could use that (and I know stick is the goto choice). Some youtube welders show MIG method (preheat, weld to mild steel, cool very slowly) so I was going to use that method initially.

I might use this as a learning experience. I'm cutting off all of the primary pipes on that manifold/housing, so I might use the scrap pieces to try cast iron to mild steel in stick, and then try another version in MIG and see the different results for interest sake.

I have used 309L stainless mig for non strength welds on cast iron, but you can't beat nickel stick electrode for a strong, ductile and machinable weld.
