Post subject:  engine advice needed

Hey guys!

A family friend has a 1275 engine which has been sitting in the back of his shed for a long time and I'm interested in it.

Just wanting to get some thoughts on it especially the gearbox as seems to be a 3 synchro late mk1 to early mk2 Cooper S gearbox...

Its a Mk2 AEG312 think flange block with what seems to be a standard bore( 70.6mm) but the cylinders have vertical groves in them and a lip so will definitely need a bore/hone.

It has a 22A1522 gearbox with remote diff housing and rubber unit ( non hardie spicer).

Has a standard non S 12G940 head.

29D non vacuum distributor.

And the usual bolt on's...

The engine is complete together with the head off.

I was wanting to know if the gearbox is a "rare" box as used on mk1-mk2 Cooper S as from what i can find in search.

What would this package be worth you think??

Any help would be greatly appreciated :)

regards

Im not sure Brad

Is there any significance to this 22A1522 gearbox?

From what I'm finding it was used on Cooper S"s

The UK 1275 Cooper S used the 22A1522 box in 1967 & 1968. It is common over there on ebay etc however there are not too many examples of this box in Aust.

The guys over here are quoting their late MK1 S's as being fitted with the 22A1288 from late 68 and although the 22A1522 is listed as the "changeover Cooper S box" I believe that was the UK only and we used the 22A1288.

From what I have seen most of the 1275 remote boxes used or sold in Aust are the 22G333, 22A1288 and 22G1128.

There is alot of info on here using the search function and it gets a little confusing as some get the numbers mixed up. 12A1288 pops up quite frequently as a 1275 box but I suspect they are referring to 22A1288. The 22A1288 is listed on UK sites as non S but there a few mentions of examples here with S gears.

Your powerplant might be a 9FSAY import from a 1968 UK Cooper S just before they went to the 9FXEY or bolted together from bits and pieces.

Here are some good topics with examples of what guys on here are finding in there cars and sheds.

Thanks Brad,

Much appreciated!

Ive been searching for hours to find any information and it was minimal which is why i thought id post it up to see if anybody had any knowledge on it.

Im trying to work out what a fair price would be for the engine....

From what i know it consists of:

Mk 2 Cooper S block- thick flange- AEG312 casting- standard bore or just over. Pistons have pitting damage on the domes.

Vented clutch housing

Non S 12G940 head

29 D non vacuum distributor

22A1522 gearbox

alternator & generater- comes with both in box

theres also other bits and pieces in a box.

The engine is complete except the head is off the block.

What would you think a good fair offer/price would be for it????

Its so hard to put a price on these things. You see them advertised for $1000 and then the next week you see them for $4000. The price varies greatly on condition (bore size and crank condition) and if you are comparing prices from auction sales which are usually inflated.

There is a MK2 S engine with clubby gearbox on Gumtree at the moment for $1000. https://www.gumtree.com.au/s-ad/yallamb ... 1170727171

There is also a MK2 S engine (no box) on ebay with a starting price of $900. https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Morris-Coop ... 0005.m1851

Without yours pulled apart to know what you are getting I would be happy to pay $1000 + if I was buying it. If I was selling it I would want at least $2k-$3k. Just leave yourself enough wiggle room incase the crank stuffed.

I totally agree with you Brad... Stuff sells cheap then stuff sells with the price of your left kidney!!! lol

I know the block will need a hone as the cylinders have a bit of a lip and some scoring down the cylinder walls... whats the max millimetres you can bore/hone a Mk2 S block??

Standard bore is 70.6mm yeah??

Yes 70.6mm is std. Not sure what the max oversize is. Maybe 73.5mm 1380cc

How deep are the scores in the bore?

I'd say the std bore block alone is worth $800 up. I sold a +.040 MK 2 S block for $600 years ago. And was cheap then.
Rarer than MK 1 blocks.

That Mk2 S 1320cc block, crank, rods, head and cam sold for $900.
