Post subject:  Rear wheel bearing help

Guys, need some advice please on wheel bearings. Replacing the rears with tapered rollers where balls were previously fitted. Obviously do away with the spacer from the ball bearings, would like to know if the bearing cones touch and sit tight together (see pics attached), what is the procedure for setting them up. Do I just put all bearings in place and the seal and nip the nut up? Does the big thick washer go back in under the nut? (see pic). On one of the hubs, the bearing had slightly worn a dish in the hub, will this affect things? Thanks again.

All good, they went together fine in the end :) The bearing's built in spacers do not pull up tight though, not sure where i'd get a shim from to use in there and set the preload? She'll just be like a trailer bearing now I guess, should be ok.....

I wouldn't bother, there's no torque transmitted through a rear hub, its just like a trailer bearing or Holden front hub. Just back off 1 slot if preload is tight.

Thanks guys, they'll be right i recon, pretty simple things really.
Thanks Doc for the tute on front bearings, been setting them up on the bench today with aftermarket bearings. One side the spacer was pretty good, no slack and still spins freely. The other side the spacer was slightly short, will machine one up tomorrow and fiddl around with it. They are fiddly. The water seal ring also was a bit small to fit over the part of the cv it is supposed to so it got a bit mangled, oh well.

Water seal ring was a pommy thing, Oz cars just got a seal the same as the outer one. If the ring doesn't fit just bin it.
