Would you really want an ashtray made from 1960s plastic in a car?

Some have different sized lid tabs Attachment: Mini Ash Trays 003.jpg Some are different metal types and side springs are a different shapeAttachment: Mini Ash Trays 002.jpg The actual shape that fits in the dash or pocket is different and even the ashtray height is differentAttachment: Mini Ash Trays 001.jpg Obviously there was a change over period. Does anyone know when this period was and the original part number?

Pretty sure the Mini K's I had, '69, '70 and '71 had the 2nd from the left type? |

The original BMC UK part number for the Mini fluted ash tray is 8D2490, supeceded by HYA2494 in Oct 1963 when it started being made in Australia. I can post the engineering drawings for various components (body, lid, spring and hinge wire) if there's any interest. The three fluted ash trays in my Sept 1970 Cooper S are the type second from left above, same as Deluxe67 has mentioned. For some reason, maybe cost, all the Cooper S supplied to NSW Police had a fluted ash tray in the front under the windscreen instead of the usual flat lid type. |

I am very interested viewing the engineering drawings for the various components. I guess the two chrome ones on the right are original type prior to Oct 1963. |

Thanks for the drawings. What I have noticed from my fluted top ashtray collection is that there are 2 types as pictured above. The 2 on the right have been made with quality chrome and the locating side springs are rounded as opposed to the 2 on the left which appear to be zinc and the locating side springs are square. In addition the bodies are also different, the 2 on the right are more rounded than the 2 on the right. |

I've got the one that vibrates loudly between 2,500 and 3,000 rpm. Have to leave the lid open to stop it zizzing. If they'd made it from plastic it wouldn't zizz, but it would be have gone the way courtesy light units went. |

I’ve looked closely at my rear ashtrays, and mine too look like the one second from the left. The colour inside though doesn’t appear to be chrome or cad plated. Looks like a dark silver birch?? Does that make sense at all? I’m having to re-finish the inside of these due to corrosion and would prefer to keep my original ones instead of buying a reproduction version. So I’d love to know what I should be finishing them in to replicate the original. |
