Could somebody please show me what the spring looks like? I don't have one and I'm getting tired of the lid flying off when I hit a bump :-(
No smoking in my car, I could glue in somehow I suppose...

Thanks

Michael

I'll take a look at mine and take a pic when I get home. I think it's pretty basic like a piece of bent spring hard wire.

Mig welding wire may be the answer.

Winabbey probably has a part number for it LOL! 2 threads on the same page about ashtrays is a bit odd!

In the Cooper S ash tray there's a small spring at each end. I'm guessing yours has neither.

Michael - If you want it you can have the complete ash tray pictured. I'm in Carnegie so not far from you. PM me and I'll give you my address so you can drop by to collect.

Maybe there were variations on the lidded ashtrays too.

Mines not like that. It has a wire hinge like the fluted style and rather than springs either end the bit you stub out on acts as the "spring". Mine looks old enough to be original ....but who knows.

The one I pictured came with some other spare parts so may not be legit for the Australian S.

The part number is 24A1538 and doesn't appear to have an Oz equivalent so maybe not enough volume to justify local production.

The ashtray pictured is identical to the one I removed from an Oz Cooper (not 'S') I had in the '80's. Forget the year but early, had sliding windows. Having said that, I suspect Cooper's were phased out by the time wind up windows arrived...? So I'm pretty sure the above was fitted to Oz cars at some stage.

My '66 S has a lid spring as Phillb describes, made of pressed spring steel and a slotted section in the centre of the tray to assist ashing.

My front ashtray also uses a wire for the hinge and spring effect is 2 tangs on the lid that rub along the fluted section. My issue is that the top has never sat flush with the vinyl at the windscreen side. The cabin side has a clip that holds it down.

Am I alone with this "feature"?
