Hello All .
I fitted a new front panel to the mini and you have to weld up about 8 holes in the top panel as you cannot procure an original type. Hence I need to know the position of the holes for the horn, probably measure from the corner of the front guard.
Allen The front panel takes a lot of time to fit and weld correctly. TY

Measurements are 107 (to bonnet grommet hole centre), 152 (to 1st horn bracket hole centre) and 183 (to 2nd horn bracket hole centre) in mm, from edge of RH guard.
Hope this helps.

I think Mk2 horns were attached to the firewall.

The majority were mounted on the slam panel but some were mounted on the inner guard in front of the servo.

This 1971 S is on the inner guard due to the washer bottle position.

However the correct spot for the 1971 S is under the alternator.

Horn bracket is on the slam panel on my 9/70 S.

Photo below is taken from above with the tape measure resting against the edge of the guard channel. Ignore the two holes in the centre of the two horn bracket holes.

The position of the horn on that 71 mini is wrong. The black plastic ducting sits there and Kopex tubing runs across the top.

Has anyone had a look at the new S front panel available at Minispares? Seems to be correct in all regards except for the indicator mounds.

Do you have a link or pic?. The only ones I can see are far from original looking.

Ok. You said Minispares so thats why I couldn't find it.

That one from Minisport is a bit better than most.

The Number plate brackets are a little too far apart.

The cutout below the bonnet lock is too large.

Indicator moulds are larger as you have already said.

The pop riveted angle brace was spot welded in late March 1968 so if you are buying this for a late MK1S or MK2S you will need to take out the rivets and plug weld the holes.

There is no image of the top to see if the extra holes in the slam panel are still there. But from underneath there are a few dags hanging down that may be for the holes.

Edit. I just rechecked my photos of unrestored cars focusing on the passenger side corner panel where the repro panels have a large hole.

Cars with the vertical brace like the Deluxe and early MK1 Cooper S have the corner panels sitting behind the apron lip. Drivers and passenger side are mirror image. Like this -

Cars with the angled brace have the corner panels flush. Drivers and passenger side are mirror image. Like this -

You would need to re-do the passenger corner on the Minisport one so the panel sits flush, mirror image to the drivers side.

Thanks for your comments. I have a 1970 S which needs a new front panel. I have a 14A8308 panel which I bought from Minisport a few years ago. Which would be the easiest to modify to get as close as possible to the original panel fitted to my car?

As you already have a front panel then just modify that one. If you want your car to look original you will need to make a few changes to the new Minisport one anyway.
