I broke the window winder handle yesterday
Are the new Repro Handles that are for sale as good or better than original ones
Rather find a good original one but would fit a repro if they are good

I bought some repro ones a few years back and they were terrible, thin and flimsy and bent before they'd break. I bought some recently and was amazed to find that they were at least as good, if not better than the originals. Not stupidly expensive either. There aren't many other repro parts I can say that about.

The original window and door interior handles were made for BMC by Wilmot Breeden and were used across the BMC range, and probably in many other vehicles. The BMC Australia manufactured items can be identified by a small dimple near the screw hole.

The dimple was added to the handle drawing effective April 1966 so any BMC cars built from that date would progressively have had the dimpled winder and door opener. Anyone absolutely fanatical on the originality of their car might like to check this. :)

It's usually the door handle that breaks because it cops a real beating by most owners and the plastic is now up to 50 years old. Luckily there are metal versions available that look almost the same when painted.

I remember my Dad explaining that the dimple indicated the improved version of the handles (he was a body hardware engineer at BMC) as apparently the earlier ones were a serious problem as they tended to break. A lot of the earlier handles would have been replaced due to breakage or perhaps even as a matter of course by dealers in the first few years of the cars life.

I have an assortment of both the plastic and diecast door handles if anyone needs them. I believe the metal ones came from Morris 1100s and/or MGBs but they look exactly the same (assuming the black paint is intact). I used the metal ones on my old S because the plastic ones are a bit weak.
