What is the significance of the number on the small alloy plate (secured by small machine screws) on the bonnet lock/support panel ? Both my mk2 S's have had them. On the first car 10/69 the number (62304) was also noted in the registration of ownership in the owners manual. I don't have the book for my current car. Doesn't match serial or engine number. An internal BMC build number ?? I did a search, couldn't find anything. |

If it's like the one pictured below, they were installed by some dealerships as a simple way to identify each vehicle they sold for service or warranty work. Attachment: ID Plate ex Dealership.jpg

Thanks Doug, that's the one. So, not factory then ?? Do you fill the holes or put it back on ?? I realize that's a "how long is a piece of string" question. |

I don't think either presence or absence of the plate will affect the car's value, so up to you. I would probably leave it, meaning the car is as sold originally. |

Dealers used an internal numbering system and would attach either a plate or later a sticker onto a car they sold. The MCS-xxx numbers were issued to the MK1 and MK2 Cooper S. MCS 115 is a plate fitted YKG2S2 1712 Attachment: Larke Hoskins MCS 115 YKG2S2 1712.jpg MCS 1151 is a sticker fitted to YG2S4 1545. Attachment: Larke Hoskins MCS 1151 YG2S4 1545.jpg MCS 1433 would probably be for a very late 1970 or early 1971 MK2 S. UK Motors just used numbers for all cars. They started with large plates and ended up going to a small tag. Attachment: UK Motors 42462 fitted to YMA2S1 4025.jpg Attachment: UK Motors 81774 fitted to AKPPB19Y 101328.jpg

Sticker was in a bag of bits, compliance plate, badges, etc, that came with the car. In poor condition, RH corner is damaged from being removed. |
