Does any one have any records or Information of any special production Minis that left the Leyland factory as a special order. For example with a Body that was usually used in an earlier production car. Please only reply if you know for sure. Cheers. |

My Leyland mini s had chalk marks on the inside of the turret marking out a sunroof. Maybe the car was pulled from sunshine stock for some reason...never really investigated it any further but the person I bought it off would not have decided on a sunroof...she bought it new but holed it up in a garage in Jindabyne in 1983 until I bought it in 2001. There were quite a few Special Production Orders for Minis and Mokes but they generally related to options or configurations of a current (at the time) production vehicle. Many of these SPO's are documented in the relevant parts catalogue, or elsewhere. According to the Building Cars in Australia book - "SPO's were raised by the Sales Department to cover supply of batches of vehicles for fleet orders. These vehicles were built to mainly standard production specification except for one or several features". I can provide more detail on SPO's, but I have a feeling that's not what you are after. Prototype and experimental vehicles were also produced but these weren't meant for release to the public. The 4WD Moke and high clearance Moke are examples. Surely the issue of warranty would prevent radical or unique vehicles being produced for a single order and then registered for road use. Is there a specific example you are referring to? |

Tony i don't have proof ( I believe it was mentioned in a NSW car club magazine a long time ago) But I have heard that someone who worked at the factory ordered a Clubman GT panel Van (Ie a panelvan with a 1275 motor) |

Without a sworn statutory declaration, photos or factory documentation I put this in the "possible but yet to be proven" basket. ![]() |

There's a documented special build Traveler ...or was it an Estate?? ..that was sold on. I think the article and pics were in an early edition of Wattos mag. Cheers, Ian |

There was both a Traveller and a Clubman Estate, at different times. Tim |

Tony, I will be going to the annual Leyland- BMC reunion in October. I am happy to ask what the likelihood would have been for the factory to build something along the lines of Brenton's example eg a Van with a Cooper S motor ect. If there is a specific example you want to relate then let me know (PM me if you wish) and I am happy to ask. The reunion is well attended by many ex employees from the factory floor right through to middle and upper management. Apparently factory staff could order cars internally ...but how extensively they could customise the vehicle seems to be your question, ...yes? Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk |
