Post subject:  Rust clearing

Hey all,
I recently bought myself a 1982 Leyland Mini. It's pretty decent condition, although still working on getting it to run. Currently, I am considering the best way to remove rust from the boot, considering it's essentially a big metal bucket and it has a fair amount of rust going for it. Can anyone recommend a few ways to best try to remove the rust?

That looks like surface rust only. Looks in great shape actually!

That doesn't look like a lot of serious rust.
I usually find the hardest way to do anything so consider any better suggestions, but I would use phosphoric acid watered down slightly, with a 3M scouring pad and rubbing over an area of the rust for 10 minutes or so. Keep the rust wet with the solution and finally wipe over with plain water. A wire brush on a drill can help dig out deeper rust. Apply another treatment until the metal looks clean.
Definitely wear rubber gloves.
The phosphoric acid is called by various names: the classic is Dulux Deoxidene, others have their own (usually cheaper) metal prep acid from auto paint suppliers, not hardwares.
There are also products that use phosphoric acid but they "treat" or coat the rust so that is made non-active, ready for painting.
I prefer the slow method.

wire brush on an angle grinder first, get all the paint and flaky stuff off - you'd get it back to shiny metal pretty quickly

The rear window seems to be the wide UK size, which would suggest it could be an imported 82 model. The plate in the boot looks like an import compliance plate?

They had wider windows?

Wider rear window, taller doors with internal hinges and windups etc.. The original rear window more or less lines up with the sides of the boot

Plate in the boot looks like a Qld Mod plate. Date on it is 14/10/04, so it probably entered Australia sometime in 2004.
The mod codes on it are: LO1 - ADR Compliance, LK1 - Seat andSeat belts, and LK6 - Child restraint anchor points... all normal for a used import.

It was imported from Japan and registered in the ACT as a 1982 Leyland Mini. Good to see I sparked some conversation in regards to it's make though. I'm having extreme difficulties finding anything on the '82 Leyland minis.

I added an image of the ACT rego check for it that shows the Make/Model/Year to the previous album
