anyone know how to tell the difference from a 998,1100 and 1275?

Check engine number on block.
But be aware a 998 may have a 1098 crank these days or a 1098 a 998 crank. Both blocks are identical.

998 prefix 9F or 9Y (except 9FSAY and 9FXEY which are 1275 Cooper S), or 99H
1098 prefix starts with 10.
1275 non S start with 12.
1275 heads have the heater outlet at an angle. 998 and 1098 do not.

They also generally have a decent-sized stamped plate on the back of the block at the left end with the engine size. At least my (sneakily overbored) 1275 does.
