Hi all

Had my fuel pump replaced a few years ago however I learnt later that the mechanic had no real knowledge of minis so I am not sure what brand/type of fuel pump was put in.

Now I notice the fuel pump has a knocking sound which seems to kick in after 10 or so minutes of driving. I must say rather loud.

My mini is a mk1 s and the fuel pump is electric mounted at the back in the subframe.

Is the pump cactus? If so where to I get an original replacement one if there is such a thing or alternatively what is a good replacement one

Thanks again

have a look and see if its a cylidrical one with alloy housing similar to this
http://sucarb.co.uk/su-fuel-pumps-spare ... -volt.html

or a square block type. (aftermarket wrong one)

It should be rubber mounted either type. Also if they are restricted on inlet side, i.e. blockage, they'll clack their head off.

The SU type tic till they get up to pressure then probably once every one or two seconds depending on the fuel being used. The crappy square block ones tac tac furiously all the time. The SU type can be converted to electronic instead of points. Then they work perfect forever.

Solid state square Facet ones go forever. Shut it up by bolting it to a square centre exhaust mount.

[I just took the dead 50 year old SU pump off the ex- moi Mk1S that has been garaged unused for35 years, because the new owner wouldn't trust it for driving about and nor would I. It can go back on or with the car if he ever sells it. It now wears a Facet.] :)

If you have the SU type pump, might be worth checking the rubber that fits inside the bracket. If it's old and crusty the pump might be loose.

Hi all
Couldn't wait till the weekend so I got under the car and can confirm it is an Su fuel pump.

Has anyone got a photo or drawing on how it should be mounted?

Thanks all

See the link Timmy put on, it shows pump bracket and rubber. The stud/bolt goes through hole in sub frame.
Some have a little triangle mounting tab. I cant put pictures on here for some reason, but go to google images and search SU pump mount mini, plenty pictures..........even the horrible little facet pumps, :-)
