Hi guys , really need advise. I want to buy a 1998 30th edition mini from NSW I live in QLD. It was registered a few years ago. He can only find a 12 digit number that looks like a vin number. He cant source the import papers and compliance.he is going to DOT today to find out more info. I am worried that if I bring it up to Qld I wont be able to register it without that paperwork, or is previous rego in NSW enough?? What do you reckon guys , please help . thanks

There were a few different Mini anniversary editions, none were 1998 models. VIN numbers can be seen here : http://www.minimania.com/Mini_Chassis_V ... s__Part_II
1984 Mini 25
1989 Mini Thirty
1994 Mini 35
1996 Cooper 35
1999 Mini 40
(As the Mini was launched in 1959 in the UK and the Cooper in 1961)

sorry it is a 1989. It would make sense if it has been rego'ed in Aus before that it wouldn't be a prob. But ive never had faith in the DOT.

According to the current import approval only pre 1988 models and 1997 to 2000 models can be imported. You'd want to be very sure you can legally register a 1989 before buying! Does it have any compliance information (eg ID badge) to say it's been modified to meet Aussie specs? Was it a personal import from UK/Japan?

looks like an import from Japan. It has been registered in NSW for many years. He is having trouble finding any plates on it. It does have what looks like a new vin stamped in the boot area but its only 12 numbers.

I just know its a 1989 30th anniversy edition, has been driven and registered in NSW . There are other models the same for sale in Australia at the moment so they can be here. Qld transport has told me if it has been registered it should be fine .

At the moment you can import:
Pre 01/01/1989 model cars
1997 to 2000 model Rover Minis.

Possibly this one was imported during different import rules, or was a personal import. Just worth checking before you buy, as cars you import now have a special plate to state they've been modified to meet Aus road standards.

A personal import is when you've owned it for 12 months overseas first.

It won't have a magenta SEVs used import plate, but it will probably have a green 'Low Volume' import plate somewhere under the bonnet. It will also have a 17 digit VIN somewhere as will, probably starting with 1MP0RT or 9000.. followed by the original 10 digit VIN.
If it was a Personal Import, out is supposed to have a yellow plate fitted, but many of those never got attached to the car due to slack rego authority processes and owners.

is it registered now? if not, does he have the last rego number, and was it in his name? he should be able to retrieve all of the rego details.

If it wasn't ever registered in his name, then I'd be staying away, or getting someone to inspect it on your behalf. If no-one from here is willing, then look up VIP Automotive Solutions

Not in his name buy he knows the previous owner and is getting the rego documents for me. I know it sounds dodge but its such an awsome car.

Yes it has all the features and is in great condition, although the steering wheel and front badge have been changed, the rest looks legit.
