Post subject:  Need help....how to tighten alternator belt

My belt is quite loose and not charging battery properly.

I have a rover mini so alternator sits on top of air con.

I've got no idea how to tighten can anyone please explain?

Thanks all

I dont know how your set up works with that guard, but

On an aussie mini

Loosen the bolt underneath the alternator it is a slide type system. I usually put a large screwdriver or pole of something between the block and alternator and and pull screwdriver to the front of the car, tensioning the belt and then tighten the bolt up underneath.

I assume yours would be the same way.

take your grille out, I bet you'll be able to see the adjustment from the front. They pivot from the top, and adjust from the bottom

These exploded parts diagrams may help. You can see the adjusting link at the bottom.

Edit: It looks like you may have the 1997 onward version at bottom right of the diagram above. Is that right? If so perhaps it's the air con compressor that provides the adjustment of the fan belt with the alternator bolted solid to the engine.

See here.

1997 versions have a serpentine bely and a plastic cover and different mounts and alternator.

Dawi03's is definitely an 80's or early 90's setup, with an adjustment between the AC compressor and alternator.

Hi Harley do you know how to tighten mine at all? I'm guessing the grille needs to come off for me to see?

The compressor is fixed to the engine and is not movable. The compressor belt is tightened by adjusting the isler pulley.

I know that isn't the bit you need to know - you want to adjust the alternator.

The alternator hinges at the top where the two bolts are - there is a single bolt at the bottom connecting the alternator to a plate with a slot in it that is mounted to the compressor. Loosening this will allow the alternator to swing towards the front of the car - but there isn't a lot of adjustment even in that so a new belt is possibly needed.

Yep I worked out how to do it the bottom part of alternator kinda swings out after loosening large bolt. I managed to tighten belt good.

Thanks all that helped me out I really appreciate it
