Just after a little advice one what you think would be best course of action for my ignition system on a MK1 Cooper S which hasn't been run in 40 years.

I know it is hard to tell from the pic, but I can tell you the leads are rubbish, and someone has tried to waterproof the rubber booties with some type of sealant.

I will replace the spark plugs obviously, replace the leads and remove the rubber boots for now. Do you think I should just replace the dissy cap and rotor arm at the same time?

Are the rubber boots standard fitment on the mk1 cooper s, or were they an aftermarket item?

Anything I am missing?

Test the leads for resistance. If they were copper they will be fine, if suppression leads they are toasted.
The boots were standard but IMO more trouble than worth. Moisture used to sweat under them. I use WD40 instead.
Inspect cap and rotor. if contacts not burned and cap not cracked they are OK. Quality was better back then.

I have a Mk1 S here that I sold 35 years ago and it has been parked ever since. Cap and rotor are like new. :)

What the Doc said...

You can coat the inside of the coil "boot" with a thin smear of silicon grease to reduce condensation...

If the Spark Plug caps are in good condition...reuse them with some good quality leads...

Start with a good quality, new dissy cap and rotor...and electronic ignition for reliability (wait for the howls of derision!)

Yes i have felt the pain of throwing away second hand and broken items only to need them again.

Never throw anything out.
Always keep them as a sample even if they are broken etc.
Then you take them with you when someone tells you they were never fitted to that particular model!
