Post subject: | Alternator wiring |
Hi, Whilst poking around in the engine bay this afternoon I found 3 wires hanging loose. Then on further inspection I found that the alternator isn't connected. As far as I can tell, the two brown wires go to the alternator, but wat I don't know is which spade connectors they attach to. I'm not really keen on getting it wrong. The other unknown is what the white wire with a purple trace is for. The loom is a Vinwire loom and I did ask them for a water temp to be added to my Deluxe loom. Could this be what it is? Thanks in advance, James |

Did the Vinwire harness come with a wiring diagram?, i see that the wires are numbered . My guess would be the large brown wire goes to one of the large terminals on the Alternator , the orange/ green might be the alt light to the dash ( don't quote me though ) , and not sure about the white / purple . |

I certainly got a wiring identification chart from VinWire, but that was when they were in Bellingen. Why not give them a call today? |

Hi, I've got it on my agenda to give them a call today. I had someone else install the harness for me a few years ago and the instructions are long gone. Fortunately I did keep the piece of paper with the batch number, so hopefully they should be able to tell me fairly easilly. |

Purple/white wires are usually the one connected to the door operated interior light switches... i.e the spring loaded gadget that fits into the door frame. When the door opens it provides the earth to the interior light. |

Hi all, I've spoken to Vinwire. Here is what they've told me; The harness was originally ordered to suit a generator, but I've now changed it over to an alternator. He have me some instructions over the phone as a how to convert the wiring from a generator to alternator. To be honest what he was describing sounded like black magic and voodoo. There was something about joining several wires and also about the regulator and alternators having an inbuilt one. Long story short, the brown wires go to the alternator. The white wire with the purple trace is for the oil filter warning light. Redundant on my model, but I will repurpose to be used with the water temp gauge. Cheers, James. |
