Hey folks...

First time post, exploring some options before starting a complete rebuild... please be gentle with me!

Has anyone ever done a diesel conversion? My google fu is failing me... I'm wondering if it's possible to put a BMC into a 72 Leyland? Or is there a better way to do it?

It's not a 'must' but something I'm considering...

Do you mean the BMC tractor? It was a 998 diesel and compared to a car it's gutless. I'm not sure what other BMC diesels there are that would fit. Plus it would all be low on power so I reckon your best option would be a modern day diesel if you wanted to go that route.

Thanks Kennomini,

This is what I've been finding as I hunt around too... I'm a bit worried the BMC 948 diesel would turn the car into a gopher... and I'm not sure about working with a modern motor... doable but not sure I want to.

Ah well. Petrol it is. All our other vehicles are diesel so it was just simpler to keep only one set of fuel tanks around... not to worry.

A bloke in Vic has a Morris minor with the 948cc BMC diesel tractor motor, he put a turbo on it for more oomph.
Stock n/a diesel had 16HP, woohoo!
Won't fit a Mini, crank is wrong. It's a north/south engine only.
And wider at fan end due to the injection pump drive.

There was someone on here doing a diesel out of a Peugeot into a clubman, but the thread died years ago.

I've just come back from Europe - so many little diesels... I'd look at a Fiat engine first

There have been a few Daihatsu diesel conversions done, including one in a moke.

Was there some guy up North Qld with a 3 cyl Daihatsu charade turbo diesel in a Moke. I remember talking to him about it a while ago. Can't remember who he was. Mind you it is hard finding one of these engines today . They are
hen's teeth.
