Thanks for the reply TimW the paint guy suggested 500ml but I don't want to run out or have stacks left going off in the tin. |

If its Acrylic you have to remember that you add 1.5 times the amount of thinners , so 1 litre of paint actually makes 2.5 litres of paint |

Thanks AJ But surely the thinners flashes off and you are only left with the same amount of paint left on the roof? Forgive my ignorance. I successfully painted an MGB GT but that was all Green and used about 4 ltrs of acrylic paint. 10yrs later it still looks brilliant. |

I just painted my bonnet with custom rattle cans. Each can was charged with about 100ml of paint. I used all three cans = .3l paint. A bonnet is only about half the size of a roof. |

The paint shop assured me that 500mL was enough with left overs for the roof, but I used it all and when I needed a touch up I had to by another 500mL. This seems a common story that paint suppliers tell you how little you need, and professionals can do that, but when you are not it is common to need a little more. You would think that they would err on the side of caution and sell a bit more. Less hassle for everyone. Stewart. |

meehal wrote: phil850 - curious how the rattle cans panned out, i'd like to repaint my roof and spray cans would be handy if it give an ok finish? No it didn't give an OK finish. But that may be my fault. It's a but coarse and will need a lot of compounding to make it smooth. This may be because of my nervousness not to get runs in it and didn't overlay the paint thick enough. The colour should come up OK (Nurburg White) with buffing. I don't have a power buff, so lots of hard rubbing to come. Don't let me put you off, in the right hands, rattle cans may be good. |

I find with rattle cans it's all about the nozzle, most don't have a wide enough spray pattern look for a can with a wide spray. Also if you dunk the cans in warm water before use it will up the pressure a bit and give a better finish.... |

A friend of mine did his car with an airless sprayer, took the best part of a day but it actually turned out excellent. Just really slow and the paint needs to be thinned more than normal. |

If you get a litre it gives you the opportunity to throw a couple of extra coats at the roof. Give it slightly longer to cure and then you've got more to play with when you come to the buffing stage. As with most things, rather too much than too little. |

I bought a 500ml can of enamel for my roof and it just wasn't quite enough. Do an extra coat & if you need to compound, less chance of rub-through. |
