Post subject: | Leaking steering rack |
Hi all My mini has developed a leak from the 'plug' on the underside of the drivers side. See attached pic. Previous owner indicated that the rack was replaced a couple of years ago. Is this something that I can address without removing the rack? Rack removal seems quite involved. I have seen mention of jacking the drivers side up and pumping oil past the boot/gaitor. But nothing about replacing seals/gasket. The plug looks to be sealed with gasket sealer or similar? What should I reseal it with? Thanks Attachment: IMG_2005.JPG

Looks like a Chinese made rack. Not serviceable, apart from replacing the boots. A throw-away item.... ![]() You could clean the plug area up with thinners, then cover it with super strength Araldite. It takes to alloy like a duck to water. |

and consider sourcing a better quality rack, noting some of the Chinese horror stories going round... |

Australian (about 1963-4 onwards) racks are far better than the UK ones, being a shortened version of the heavier duty Morris 1100 rack. Also relatively easy to rebuild. From memory the steering geometry is also wrong with these new racks unless the later steering arms are used. |

Both Minikingdomonline (in Mulgrave, NSW) and Readspeed Mini Mecca (in Brissy) carry reconditioned Australian AYA6001 Mini racks. |

Thanks for the info guys! FYI it's a 1962 mini. How do I know what tie rods I will need? Any other steering components that I should replace while I'm in there? |
