Post subject:  Help needed please

I picked up a range of engines, parts and cars over Easter which I am now regretting a little bit... Luckily I didn't cost me much to purchase them so I'm sure I will be able to off load what I don't need once my Van is on the road... The moving and storage was more of a headache..

There was a yellow 998 engine prefix 9YA that has a strange drive shaft coming off the gearbox. Can you help me identify what it is??

My only mini experience is the Mini K van I am restoring which has a magic wand so it's a little different to start with..

That is called a "Pot Joint". Used on the Leyland Minis. The gearbox is a rod change.

A Mini K should not have a "magic wand" gear shift as far as I know? Should be a remote gearbox with a short gear stick?

Mini K Van would have a 4 sync "pudding stirrer", which uses the same diff housing as the remote but has a long gear lever

A Mini K poverty pack would also have a pudding stirrer.

That explains it, thanks.

My van is definitely the pov pack, very basic but it adds to the charm.

You can use the pot joints instead of the rubber unis. Less breakages and cheaper bits. Not sure what exact bits you need though.

Output shafts, pot joints and driveshafts. Eg:

It might be worthwhile for the next project.

Did all clubmans have them?

Only later ones. Definitely a better joint. I'll be swapping when I get around to pulling the motor

"Clubmans" had rubber uni-loints & 4-sync extension housing (remote) shifters,,,

"Leyland minis" (Later clubman "SHAPE" minis) all had pot joints with rod-change gearboxes

1973-1974 was a bit of a hodge-podge , cross-over between the 2 types, they could have any combination really

"plus" the poverty pack minis were the cheaper version, often having earlier stuff,,, & then there`s the last 40 plus years of other people swapping stuff around as they play with them :-)

just saying :-)

Yeah its all over the place. Mine is a povo same as most early vans. But the rubber unis are just a bust waiting to happen.
