Now that my bank account has recovered im going to make another start on the K. My question is, is there any best practice for removal of the hydrostatic system from my shell?

As above. Leave it in and get a good setup.

Rip it out and shot it in the bin. New set of cones, shocks and some Hi-lo's.

I sense a difference of opinion 8)

I have a rubber cone mini with the Moulton SmoothAride cones. I find it quite good.

Having said that, I have not ridden in a hydro car, and those with them usually swear by them.
I would reverb and continue with the hydro setup.

I'm in two minds. My main question is if there is a specific sequence which has to be followed as I am rebuilding my mini and need to paint the underneath of the shell.

I think the question was about how to do it not if he should.

Recently converted our K to dry. Much better.

No particular sequence, other than release the pressure first... then just undo everything until it is all out on the floor. Lift it up on stands before you start of course. Both subframes need to be out before the pipes can come off the floor.

If you want to try to save or reuse any fittings, etc. I'd suggest you give everything you want to come undone a good spray and soak over a couple of days with some sort of penetrant before you start. My 'rust juice' of choice is a 50-50 mix of Acetone and ATF, but you need to choose the right sort of spray bottle :-)

Thanks Tim. When I get everything off I'll look at the condition of the bags and make a call from there. Not ever having a hydro mini before I'm not sure how you adjust the ride height. Does it just depend on the amount of fluid you pump in?

In which respect? I have one of each, and I'll keep my hydrolastic unit going as long as I can.

Any suspension type will be fantastic when properly adjusted and refreshed.

My dry suspension was horrible and hard and didn't drive very nice. Since swapping to brand new minispares cones, shocks, Hi-Los, adjustable lower arms and tie bars (with a full alignment and decent ride height) the car has been awesome.

Hydro minis have a habit of sitting very high in that rear, and almost on the bump stop at the front. The height can be adjusted to some degree by increasing or decreasing the pressure, but it has to be high enough to preload the helper spring in that rear and start lifting the front. The main reason we moved away from it was for a good, consistent ride height and alignment.

The car now sits level, is more comfortable (Readspeed Hi Los) and handles far better than it ever did before. The hydrolastic was guaranteed to strand the car at some point, and I'd rather the car I rely on day to day have slightly less potential for catastrophic failure.

Just for kicks just do one side for starters :P. Hydrospastic suspension seems to be a love it or hate it. would it be an idea to keep the hydro frame original and source some rubber cone/spring subframes?
