Yeah stuff is getting crappy. I work at a tool shop and im pretty disgusted with some of the quality of the materials being used. Its all dollar. Manufacturers are all off shore. We need to remember that when prices seem steep for quality or that kind of thing is all that will exist.

Chatting to John Smidt at the Show & Shine and he also finds it much more difficult to source quality parts for sale in the shop. He showed me a few items that now gather dust as he refuses to sell them based on negative feedback. Rubber items are one of the main culprits. It's nice to have parts vendors with a conscience.

The motto is - don't throw out an old part until you are sure the new one is better.

I just attempted to fit a new speedo drive oil seal. Found the new seal is bigger OD than the old, I will need to machine the threaded flange out to fit it.
[edit] I found the old seal had left its metal case behind. New seal fitted once I bored that out to remove. So, disregard my comment above.:)

The filler strips on mine went the same, not to mention the 'stainless steel' headlight rims that are going rusty, the door moulds that don't fit, the sill mould that wrinkles, even on straight sections, the roof gutter mould that blew off.....bla ....bla..bla. :-(

When I installed the new fuel tank filler rubbers they looked great. Little did I know that only a few years later they'd be in worse condition than the original 1967 one which I threw out ;-(

A fuel filler seal like that one was described by a local supplier as "the best available", and went the same way after less than 2 years. Now trying a 'genuine Rover' one from Minispares. Every rubber component in the front end was showing signs of cracking after spending 8 weeks assembled in to the subframe on the garage floor...

Rubber parts seem hit and miss... Usually miss.
