G'day all, I have a 1966 Cooper S with the wrong dipstick. It is car number 1707 & it currently has the newer type dipper with the rubber cup that sits (inverted) over a (part number unknown) white nylon tube. According to my parts book & John Sneddon's book, I should have a nylon tube, part 12G107, matched with dipper rod 12A116, which does not have the rubber cup. Has any one got a photo of a 12A116 dipstick to show me please? Thanks in advance for assisting me in this conundrum, as I constantly get told I have the "wrong" dipstick.... Ian. PS, It is engine number 41703. |

Rather depends on what engine it has in it? are you sure it's the original block? If you use the wrong combination you won't have the right amount of oil in it if your using the stick for quantity...... |

My '69 K has a plastic tube and a flat metal dipstick (12A116?). My '66 S has the half-round section dipstick and metal tube. I think all Ss used the one in gtogreen's photo. |

Thanks for the very quick responses every one, - I think that I finally found the correct dipper, because it is the same as the half round one as photographed by Brad on his engine. My engine currently has the "later" flat dipstick (also as pictured by Brad - same as the blue one). So that's the one I am going to get rid of! |

Your engine bay is very nice. One thing I was going to ask was if you have tracked down a P clip for your booster hose yet? |

For the sake of a discussion here, I would like to suggest that it doesn't matter whether you use the plastic tube/flat dipstick or the metal tube/round dipstick (or can you mix and match?). I understand that that the oil level set by either dipstick is meant to be between the top and bottom of the lay shaft in the gearbox. |

Something that everyone should do once...is empty their sump hot and drain overnight (say)...then later accurately fill to the manufacturers recommendation and then see what the dipstick reads!  When I did this, I also jacked the passenger side high to try and get the last skerrick of oil out... |

Agreed, If I fill my sump with the recommended quantity of oil, the (flat) dipstick shows it to be around the "A" in max.. but it is a point of reference. |

Be aware that running it lower than min can give oil surge and loss of oil pressure on RH bends. Seen many worn crankpins because of this. Good thing Mt Panorama was mostly LH corners...! Might not be original but I like a centre oil pickup on sporty Minis. |
