Hey guys, my engine number is 9YA/ta/H3557, what size would it be and what do you'all recommend as being the best oil to use?

The best oil is a classic internet forum argument... they can go on for pages and pages and people get very cranky

'popular' would be valvoline XLD classic, though I won't let it anywhere near my motor :lol:

Brad Penn 20W-50 partial synthetic.
This is what my engine builder recommended. He is a mini specialist and I don't do a lot of kilometres per year so the price is not that important to me but a rebuild is expensive.

This has been discussed in depth before on this forum (and many others). Suggest you use the Search function to see what others are using and have recommended over the years. Just remember Minis don't like modern full synthetic oils, especially the gearbox which has to share the oil with the engine. 20W-50 whatever oil, and there are plenty to choose from. No matter which one, I always add a bottle ZDDPlus zinc additive, essential for old school flat tappet engines

At some stage in a post last year, GR recommended Gulf Western, Aussie made oil. I use 20w/50 XP. Maintains great oil pressure when hot. Regular price around $17 for 4 ltrs, And it quite regularly comes on special at Supercheap and Autobarn for $9.95. Can't beat that. Swapped my old ute over from Valvoline to Gulf Western also, never ran better.

I now run the Gulf Western, I agree it's good for oil pressure. Unlike some well known oils.

I was pro Gulf Western until I found foreign matter in the bottom of the container.

Geeeee TK how lucky are you to find out about foreign matters in the bottom of an oil container, I have to watch TV or get on the net or read the news paper, and hear you are walk into you local store buy one of the best oils on the market for our old clunkers and you get to find all these foreign matters in the bottom no telling where they will turn up these days. :shock:
Looks like I will have to go and buy lots more of this oil to find what foreign matters i'm missing out on, no wounder your so smart, think i'll go up to GULF WESTERN tomorrow and buy a couple of pallets full of the 4 litre containers because I cannot find any foreign matters in the bottom of the 200 litre drums, it's just not my lucky day :(

Does oil last indefinitely in a container? I know petrol doesn't but can you buy oil when it is cheap and keep it a year or so?

Only lasts about 2,000 years so put a date on it when you buy it, make sure it doesn't go off. The oil you buy on special has probably been on shelf for a few years.

GR continue to use sarcasm if it raises you to an even higher status but it does nothing for your intelligence.

I merely pointed out that when doing an oil change I found stuff in my Gulf Western oil that shouldn't have been there.

Over the 45,000 years that I've been a mechanic I've seen lots of stuff in brand new oil lots. Just took it to be the norm as it was in both cheap and expensive oils, you just never poured the last bit out.
200 ltr (old 44 g) were the worst. Mostly appeared to be a dirt like substance, although we did find a fair amount of drill shavings in a drum from a well known oil company, which I wont mention the name of because of reprisals from the
Hi-tec oil company.

I use the penrite mini oil......... hasn't blown up yet...... that's got to be a good thing. :D
