Just wondering whats to cold for an modfied engine.

Hi have zapped my engine with a thermal laser gun.

Top rad hose is 72c after a sprited run. Heater about 34c on a fullbore on a hot day which is luke warm

Engine block was chemically cleaned. Rad taken a part and rodded cleaned. Pump, hoses all new 82c thermostat

Still wrecken its running about 10c to cold.

The temp guns can give different readings depending on the surface, I.e. rubber hose to bare metal.
I assume it doesn't have temp gauge. The top of thermostat housing is best place to check or where temp sender would normally be, should be around the same as thermostat. If its not getting up to rated temperature, i'd be testing the thermostat.
Maybe also double check with either thermometer or other gun before you go ripping it apart looking for problems that aren't there.

zap all over the head - especially near the heater outlet at the #4 end

I did do that and the heater outlet is cooler than the thermo end. Gt temp guage shows just before half way.

Basically my heater is running luke warm on a hot day and colder on a cold day. Its running a new 3 core copper radiator and water heated inlet manifold

Its a Mk3 which has the large heater and heater duckting. I may have to restrict the intake pipe to see if that makes a difference.

Most Minis are toastee warm in the summer and winter

I am sure I checked the termostat before I put it in and it was pretty close to 82c.

Does your heater return into the radiator outlet hose just before the water pump.
If you have a really big heater core and the heater is on, most of your water may be getting cooled by the heater. Some water will still go through the thermostat if it has the vent hole in it.
If your engine is running at less than the thermostat opening temperature, then the water must be bypassing the thermostat some how.

you must have a really effective cooling system, what about an oil cooler? maybe you should cover it up and see if it's different - I don't use one on my S

Thanks for the replies. This engine has never run hot. The block was professionally cleaned in an alkaliine cleaner over a couple of days then hot tanked this must have worked cleaning out all the crap inside the block.

No heater valve just straight from the outlet to the heater and no oil cooler.

I will souce a 88 degree thermostat and see how i get on.

As for the weather it was 28.9c yesterday now thats hot by our standards.
