Post subject: | Output shaft nut removal. |
Greetings All. Stripping down a 4 speed sync box. I have removed everything except the nut off the output shaft. (1 1/2 "). Is there any preferred method to this. The manual just says remove nut. I assume I can drift the shaft towards the clutch end, and attack the nut on the bench, or Buy a longer 1 1/2" socket and get the big rattler out. Any secrets for these? Alex. |

Lock it in 1st and 3rd at the same time and then undo nut. Check with the experts about 1st/3rd, but it's, something like that. You need to remove the nut as the shaft comes out the flywheel end of the box and the double row bearing comes out the timing gear end. |

1st & 4th!!!! edit - it's best to take the nut off with it still in the gearbox - buy a deep throat impact socket. Avoid using the mainshaft as a drift for knocking the input shaft out. First problem is the synchro hub ball bearings like to fly all over the place, and second is that it's just a bit nasty I made a slide hammer to pull it out - nut off, gear off, circlip off, slide hammer on, knock knock, out |

Thanks Guys. Sounds like I need to put some stuff back in? Do I need the lay shaft and reverse in place? I assume something else has to stop it turning. Thanks Alex. |

An air impact wrench will have that nut off in no time. Brian |

Thanks Brian. Going to buy a long socket at MiniSport (when I get some time) Bought a standard socket (1 1/2") a couple years back for the clutch. Wish I bought a long one then, ha! Will try lever first. Do have a air rattler, and if that fails, got electric one they used for the wheels on the Titanic boat trailer. Got no idea what I'm doing, but having a lot of fun. Cheer Alex. |

Alex, after seeing the job you have done on your red Cooper I would say you have a very good idea of what you are doing, its just lovely. Brian |

Thanks Brian. Well, fella at work lent me a 3/4 > 1/2" converter, so I connect my electric "Renigade"impact driver. Wizzed it off easy. Enough for tonite. Still hot in the shed! Thanks all. Now know how to lock it up, and remove that big nut. So much info out there! Goodnight All. |
