Went to fit up the twin 1 1/2 Su's today and found the nice HP air Filters dont fit as in hitting the firewall near the speedo hole I have some other air filters but are flimsy tin so i was looking for some short style velocity tubes/stacks to mount the bases of these filters better so they seal Does anyone know where i can get these or even new air cleaners with a decent mounting plate Thanks Marc |

The HP filters have an inbuilt ram stacks which are about the same dimensions as per the Vizard recommendation for high flow figures. It may be worth talking to Hans from HP Performance in Melbourne to see if thinner K&N filter inserts are available to give you more clearance. Failing that K&N have filters available for 1.5" SUs which have offset mounting to provide greater clearance to the firewall. |

Well i found another issue The LHS Float Bowl is like 1-2mm from the firewall cross member when fitted up to the engine Is this how they normally fit up anyone got some photos of how there 1 1/2 twin setup fits |

Its possible you have a set of non-Mini twins. Those intended for inline engines (Sprites etc) use a flatter manifold that sits the carbs lower. Mine are at least 15mm clear (plenty of room to waggle a finger between carb and cross member). Also, I would be interested if someone has some of the items shown in Timmy's post. They look like the (allegedly) K&N items I bought years ago which turned out to have an internal diameter at least 3 mm less that the mouth of my HS4. They also required a degree of "customisation" to fit inside the tapered K&N filters they were supplied with. Easily done with a few files but annoying just the same.. Cheers, Ian |

Apologies if I'm stating the obvious, but were the carbies originally set-up for a Mini manifold? One of the most common sources for HS4 SU's is from the MGB, but to use them on a Mini manifold you need to change to 30 degree float bowl adapters so the bowls remain vertical. If not the float bowls may end up being very close to the firewall like yours. |

your air filters will most probably hit the fire wall before fitting on, they`re very deep & with "central hole" type filter-base-plates, makes for hitting firewall quite normal usually offset base plates are needed to lift the filters up, away from the fire wall |

As theminiman has said (and you can see on the filter backplate drmini has above) the holes are normally offset to the bottom edge for more clearance in minis. Your filters would probably work for an MG/Sprite. |

Yes the air filter issue can be addressed with offset filters The main question is the lhs fuel bowl being so close to the firewall cross member when i put them on the engine |

Your HP filters look heaps deeper than mine. Maybe you've just got replacement filters that are a bit too deep. |

Good photos, and a really nice set up set of twins. - You can see why they have a following,, they just look the goods. not sure if this is a goose chase, but to my inexperienced eye your float lids don't look like the typical HS4 SU ones - your fuel turret( for want of a better description) is cast where most SU HS4 type fuel connectors i am familiar with have brass sticking out. ( i couldn't quite make out your AUU numbers on the top of the lid..... but it may be worth checking against sucarb.co.uk to find out the model...... i am thinking if the lids are different then the floats may be different too - and there is not a lot of room. AS i said could be a wild goose chase based on my inaccurate knowledge, but i leave it out there for you to consider. Your spacer next to your heatshield, looks about right - needs enough space to lift to clear extractors but not too much horizontal push to foul firewall - check with others, and Doc from memory- i think 20 or 25mm is the go. When i ran twins in a rod change engine, i installed an extra engine steady underneath, for fear of fuel bowls making contact with firewall as the engine 'rocked'. Cheers Darryl |
