Post subject: | Paint over Bitumen? |
Has anyone had any success painting over bitumen? I have revived a roundnose project that was a bare metal respray 30 years ago. The floor pan underside has been painted with bitumen and then sprayed with acrylic. The acrylic has peeled back in a few location but OK in about 75% of the floor area. The floor is solid and rust free so I don't want to disturb the bitumen and because of the textured finish, I can't rub back the acrylic. Any suggestions on what type of paint I could use to reseal the underfloor that will stick to both the acrylic and bitumen? Thanks in advance. Mozzie |

Hate to say it, but bitumen! Black tar over the lot. Will help stop the acrylic from peling off. |

Maybe try spraying small area with acetone, might soften paint and allow adhesion. |

The best finish I ever got was with Dulux sound deadener/ ripple finished in Dulux enamel, but they stopped making both in the '80s. Acrylic paint doesn't stick to many surfaces except its own primer. Enamel is much more adhesive - especially after 30 years of the bitumen drying out. |

I had the same and washed it off with petrol. Slow process but worth it. Nothing will adhere properly and will never look original. |
