Can anyone tell me if there will be much improvement fitting a 266ss cam with a standard 202 head? I was looking at a 997 cam as an option.

I've used both in 1098s, the 266 beats the 997 for torque and HP. 997 was a good cam, in its day.

+1 on the 266ss, Great cam.

So a standard 202 head won't kill off all the performance gains? I'd much prefer to buy the 266ss cam and get my car running and save for a modified head later.

It will be fine. I used 202 heads just with minor mods.

much easier to change a head later... a camshaft, not so easy

Simon that's what I was thinking. I've done an internet search and the 998 A+ engine runs smaller valves and much higher compression that the 1098. I was hoping on building the bottom end to the spec I want with flat top pistons and do the head later.

If you are thinking of running flat top pistons then consider sourcing a Cooper #295 head which has bigger combustion chambers to suit flat tops and bigger valves and better porting than std 202 head.

A 202 head can be made to breathe as well or better than a 295.
See Graham Russell.

I spoke with Graham Russell a couple of months ago and I have to say that I was really impressed with how easy he was to speak to. That's when I got a rough price on a new 202 head.

Just yet another quick question, the C-AEA526 valve springs the better ones to suit the 266ss cam or can I get away with the C-AEA525 springs from Minispares?

Don't use either of those springs on a small bore head unless running valves from a 1275 which are longer stems.
Use Sprite or Cooper double 7000 rpm ones.

Drmini the head will be running 1275 valves.

Well I would use c--aea526. Work fine to 8000 on mine.
