just finding out if there any issues with connecting a 12V Cigarette Lighter Socket to a car with a generator/dynamo and positive earth?
i want to use it to keep GPS charged or a crash cam.
anyone had any problems with the fluctuating voltage? (don't want to damage GPS unit)
obviously the wiring will have to be set up for the red wire positive earth
I have an adaptor with red and black wire with plastic insulted body. so it should straight forward to connect

Where is the best place to cut into circuit (shut down with ignition off)

Shouldn't be a problem with it, most modern units can handle fluctuations and I doubt the system will ever put out too much power. Have you concidered changing it to negative earth, no parts or modifications involved and you can swap it back at any time.

thanks peter. i think i would only consider changing over if i was to fit a alternator.
I would like to leave the generator just to keep it original.
i don't intend on adding any other electrical items such as radio or heater so it shouldnt be a problem

My Deluxe is running a generator and has been converted to Negative earth. You don't need to replace the generator with an alternator.

The positive earth isn't the issue. what i was concerned about was the fluctuating voltage.and where the best place to wire into the circuit.

main lead from battery, maybe through switch/fuse.

Connect black wire (-ve) to fuse (21) same side as the green wires connect to .This fuse is switched by the ignition switch . Connect red wire (+ve) to earth .

Edit : Most electronic equipment these days have internal voltage stabiliser circuit and polarity protection

exactly what i needed

We fitted a 12V socket fitted to my daughters 850 with positive earth.
I wrongly assumed the the Garmin GPS would have polarity protection, it didn't
If yours is a 2 wire socket, connect it around the correct way, just to be sure

I am running a generator on my moke and have a cigarette lighter connected up. I run my GPS, charge phones etc without issue.

It has been changed to negative earth though.

Don't think it would work and it would cause problems if still positive earth.

when i purchased the cigarette lighter socket i chose one with a plastic body so the body wasn't earth and just wire it so the red wire was earth job done.
