1/2nd will move about without the box all together.

Post pics of the teeth on the gears and the Baulk rings.

Have a good look at the double row bearing and the laygear shaft. These are almost always knackered and need replacing.

I've got mine apart at the moment and will be going through it over the next week or so (too lazy to do it all at once)

I am a Fitter and Turner by trade and have been working on cars and motorcycles for 40 years
Have rebuilt engines and gearboxes of all sorts over the years
Rebuilt stuff more complicated than a Mini Gearbox
And i only do things once, that is i do it right the first time

My main work has been the restoration of Vintage Indian Motorcycles
I do everything in house including cylinder boring and honing to Alloy welding, etc

Well the gearbox is all apart and is in reasonable condition Input shaft bearing is knackered and is of an unknown brand Question is for the Gearbox Experts 1st and 2nd gear syncro hub seems to have a lot of sideways movement on the spline before it engages the baulk rings compared to 3rd and 4th syncro hub Is this normal or is there a spacer missing Any good exploded drawings would be appreciated. Or even if someone has a gearbox apart and can show my theirs The mini website ones i looked at are a bit average Thanks in advance Marc

LAYSHAFT IS STUFFED... SIDE BY SIDE WITH A NEW ONE. DOUBLE ROW ON THE RIGHT IS STUFFED, BEARING CAGE IS BROKEN. SIDE BY SIDE WITH AN OK OLD ONE SIDE BY SIDE WITH AN OK ONE AND THE STUFFED ONE...

Thanks for the pics It looks the same as mine at the 1st/2nd syncro hub I find it strange why there is so much play there compared to 3rd/4th My box will be treated to all new bearings and lay-shaft And a full rebuild of the diff As I only plan on doing this once As i would rather be out there driving it

Yep, do it once, do it right. I'd suggest you check the bearings before replacing them. Sometimes they will be better than new ones.... Make sure you check your thrusts, and be sure the tolerances are right.

She will be rebuilt better than new Bead blasted all the alloy bits ready for a new coat of paint I even welded up a couple of chipped fins on the case to make it look 100%

I recently overhauled my Cooper s box. Pulled it down three times until I was happy with it. Stuffed a new 3rd motion shaft bearing in the process. If he wants to give it to the experts, so be it.

Well, a paid professional expert gearbox rebuilder overhauled my gearbox and didn't do the the 2/ 3rd gear synchros properly. Of course I had removed the gearbox and taken it to him for overhaul so I was liable for removing the damned thing and refitting it again after rectification. I wasn't a happy camper.... If he couldn't get it right, I'd be reluctant to do it myself..

You can buy a Timken in a Timken box that is inferior and liable to fail. I tend to stick with suppliers who consistently provide good quality stuff. But anyone can be caught out by the "knock offs" out there...
