When I restored the 67 Deluxe, the entire original wiper gear was clapped out. I replaced the lot including motor, wheel boxes etc with Mini K stuff. When wet the wipers overtravel the windscreen rubber on both sides. I have a 105 degree gear in the motor. Couple of questions;
1. Why would this happen even with the 105 gear?
2. Is there such a thing as a 100 degree wiper motor gear?
3. What does the external adjuster on top of the motor where the motor shaft would be do? And how should it be adjusted? (can't see this being related to the problem?)

Thanks

Michael

A number of possible problems.
The 67 would have had UK Lucas wiper equipment when new. The 68+ cars have Australian Lucas equipment.
The wiper panel is different.
The wheel boxes are in different positions on a 67 vs a 68+ roundnose or clubman.
The wiper blades are longer on the 68+ roundnose or clubman. 10" vs 11".
The 67 wipers park on the, IIRC, right and the 68+ park on the left.
The wiring to the wiper motor and switch is completely different.
The wiper switch is different.
The Aus motor has 12V to it all the time. The UK wiper motor has 12V to it supplied via the wiper switch when you turn on the wipers.
The Aus wiper motor has a separate earth wire between the motor body and the chassis.
The first Aus Lucas single speed wipers had 110deg sweep wipers which caused the RH wiper to hit the windscreen rubber. Mine has done it ever since new and stiil does.
Later cars used 105 deg sweep wipers on both single and two speed wipers.
The wiper cable drive pin is further out from the centre on the 110 deg (Edit: Changed 105 to 110 deg) wipers. This moves the cable further for each revolution of the mechanism.
The adjusting screw is for adjusting the motor shaft end float/play.

Ron, I think the drive pin is closer to the centre of the gear to reduce the travel of the cable for the 105 deg wiper.

You are right Phil. A typo on my part. 105 should be 110.
I will edit my post.

Thanks for the replies. I know now a solution would be to relocate the gear wheel drive (105 degrees) pin closer to the centre to reduce the sweep. This is beyond my capabilities but if I find someone to do it, how far would the pin have to be moved?
What mystifies me is the system worked ok on the Mini K before being fitted to the Deluxe. The entire system is Mini K stuff. Obviously the windscreen is exactly the same, how have I gained extra sweep on the Deluxe?!
Apparently 100 degree gears do exist but are rare as rocking horse poo...

The simple answer is the two systems are not interchangeable unless you also replace the panel between the windscreen and bonnet where the wiper arm wheel boxes are. This alters the entire geometry of the wiper arms and how they sweep across the screen.
The gear ratio in the wheel boxes is also different.
You may be able to get away with using the 67 wheel boxes and drive cable with the Aus motor but?????

the car must be a very early LHS park, or isn't a '67 car...

Hi Simon,

The Deluxe had RH parking and all the bits on it had '67 dates so I'm confident it's a '67 car....

Because as per BillB's posts the panel below the windscreen and the layout of the wipers on a 67 Deluxe and a Mini K is completely different.

On a (pre mid 68) deluxe the wiper posts are symmetrical to the cars centre and the wipers park on the right
On a Mini K the wiper posts are offset toward the right and the wipers park on the left.

In fact even the switches in the switch panel are different, on a 67 Deluxe the wiper switch is on the left of the ignition switch, on a K (or post mid 68 Deluxe) the wiper switch is on the right. If you even try and swap the positions of them you can't.

Wiper motor changeover is supposed to be Deluxe YMA2S2 32800 and MK1S YKG2S2 4029

Phillb is giving me credit for 'miniron's knowledge.
The only contribution I have to this discussion is that my mid '69 K has wipers that oversweep on the RH side and hit the rubber on the LH stroke. It has done this from new.

Yes sorry Miniron.

I'm sure I have seen a tech bulletin where they did something to correct what your car has done since new Bill. i.e. they realised it was an issue and corrected it at some stage.

It seems reducing the sweep by relocating the pin on the gear wheel is the only solution. The coverage areas of the windscreen the wipers wipe is fine on both sides, the extended sweep being the problem.
I guess moral of the story is don't replace Deluxe wipers with Mini K wipers....

Hi Bill B,
Your mid 69 K is doing the same thing as my late 68 S.
That means the problem wasn't fixed by the 105 deg cable drive wheel until after mid 69.
Some body on the forum must have a car number for when the 105 deg wheel was introduced.
winabbey?

I also have a faint memory that oversweep was recognised as a problem and was dealt with.
For Miniron, my K has 6/69 on the wiper motor (no compliance plate or ID plate fitted in 1969) so mid-'69 is as close as I can get. John Sneddon's book as no reference to wipers on Ks.
