Post subject:  Flywheel Query

hi, I have a Mini flywheel that I had a new ring-gear fitted and clutch face machined. When fitting ring-gear, part of the flywheel broke away, as per photo. I was told it would not be a problem. They did not rebalance the flywheel. Any thoughts on the subject?

That looks like a fair chunk, how did they do that?

If it was balanced before that fell out, it's certainly not balanced now !

I agree, do not use this cast iron flywheel if you are going to rev it at all. That damage shown can cause further cracks which result in it's disintegration. And in a RHD Mini, it's right in line with your crown jewels...!!

Take it back to the clown that damaged it (and gave you absurd assurance that "she'll be right mate") and get him to replace it!

I agree with the Doc. Do not use this flywheel.

May well have been damaged by a dill with a hammer "Previously"

i wouldn`t go accusing people of "Possible" "previous" damage only showing now after fitting a ring gear

just saying :-)

but in saying that, no i would`t use it either :-)

That is scary. If that was presented to someone who just accepted the advice because they didn't know any better the outcome could be........ wow, I really don't want to think about it.

The hub is OK, so take that out before you bin it.
Matt Read `TheMiniMan' has some nice lightened ones that bolt onto that hub. Fine for road use. But balance first.

If it was 'previously' damaged the so called repairer should have said before going to the trouble of grinding and fitting ring gear. If it shatters, is he going to fix the damage?
