Can somebody give me a definitive answer on which seat belt type is in the 1970 Cooper S. Flexible shoulder belt and tunnel stalk or cable tunnel stalk and retractable belt, or cable tunnel stalk and flexible shoulder belt. Thanks in anticipation. |

What do you mean by flexible shoulder belt? As far as I know they were still lap sash non retractable. Bolted to the B pillar with an swiveling fitting. The buckles were the satin stainless angular shaped press button type with BMC rosette or perhaps later leyland button. (Ford used the same buckle in the Falcon) The buckles had no stalks they just lay on the floor to be squashed by the seats or stepped on by rear passengers. I agree with all of the above. Out of interest, I've been collating factory data on the introduction of seat belts and will eventually post something on here, including engineering drawings for the various types. Britax was the major supplier to BMC. |

What are the chances that original equipment belts might fail due to their age? Why not get modern reproductions? |

The buckles and latches are very well made and unless severely rusted or damaged they would be fine. As far as I know you can get the old fittings rewebbed with original look colored webbing and approved for use. From memory seat belt solutions in WA. A bit of searching should find a set. Other makes had them. Only difference the sticker for the button which you can get repo. The top section that gets all dings and scratches is replaceable and available new. They are popular with the Ford people. Google "Ford GT seat belts" in images and you'll see what I mean!! Sorry, temporary thread diversion....have some Ford buckles and repro BMC stickers, but need to know how to disassemble seat belt buckle to put BMC sticker in....anyone know? |

Reproduction Seat Belts Mini Yep, I've tried that. Maybe try it yourself, and then get back to me with all the chrome buckled seatbelts you find that have Australian Compliance? But, like I said, I'm not sure if compliance is required for older cars anyway |

Speak to Seat Belt Solutions WA. As far as I recall you send them an old set and they replace the webbing to Australian Standards. They will even replate the parts for you if you wish.
