Can somebody give me a definitive answer on which seat belt type is in the 1970 Cooper S.

Flexible shoulder belt and tunnel stalk or cable tunnel stalk and retractable belt, or cable tunnel stalk and flexible shoulder belt.

Thanks in anticipation.

What do you mean by flexible shoulder belt?

As far as I know they were still lap sash non retractable. Bolted to the B pillar with an swiveling fitting. The buckles were the satin stainless angular shaped press button type with BMC rosette or perhaps later leyland button. (Ford used the same buckle in the Falcon) The buckles had no stalks they just lay on the floor to be squashed by the seats or stepped on by rear passengers. Belts were usually colour matched to the interior.

I agree with all of the above.

Out of interest, I've been collating factory data on the introduction of seat belts and will eventually post something on here, including engineering drawings for the various types. Britax was the major supplier to BMC.

Excellent thanks.

What are the chances that original equipment belts might fail due to their age? Why not get modern reproductions?

The buckles and latches are very well made and unless severely rusted or damaged they would be fine. As far as I know you can get the old fittings rewebbed with original look colored webbing and approved for use. From memory seat belt solutions in WA. There may be other companies that do this now too.

Are there any modern ones available? The only approved belts I can find are the black plastic/Red button Style. I've been thinking of importing some new Chrome buckled belts from overseas, but obviously they're not Aussie approved, but many Mini's are pre ADR anyway?

A bit of searching should find a set. Other makes had them. Only difference the sticker for the button which you can get repo. The top section that gets all dings and scratches is replaceable and available new. They are popular with the Ford people. Google "Ford GT seat belts" in images and you'll see what I mean!!

Yep, I've tried that. Maybe try it yourself, and then get back to me with all the chrome buckled seatbelts you find that have Australian Compliance?

But, like I said, I'm not sure if compliance is required for older cars anyway

Speak to Seat Belt Solutions WA. As far as I recall you send them an old set and they replace the webbing to Australian Standards. They will even replate the parts for you if you wish.

From Seat Belt Solutions Web site...

What is Rewebbing?

Rewebbing a seat belt utilises the original manufacturers interia reel and fittings to ensure your vehicle maintains the most suitable and appropriate parts.
A new piece of webbing is fitted and sewn into the reel and meets Australian Standards AS1753. Buying a new reel commonly cost in excess of $300 per belt whereas Seat Belt Solutions can offer you a solution for less than half that price.
Contact us now to discuss your requirements.
Prices listed below:

Lap Belt

A Lap Belt is a fixed belt that runs from the floor of the car, around your lap and fixed on the other side of your seat. Lap belts are most common in central seats such as a rear seat or a bench seat or in pre 1970 vehicles. Includes rewebbing of both the tongue and buckle in any chosen colour.
$100.00 per belt (inc. GST)

Lap Sash Belt

A Lap Sash Belt is a fixed belt that runs from the floor of the car, around your lap, fixed to the floor again, across your chest and fixed to the B-pillar. Lap Sash Belts are most common in cars pre 1980 or in commercial vehicles A Lap Sash belt is static and does not retract into the vehicle. Includes rewebbing of both the tounge and buckle in any chosen colour.
$135.00 per belt (inc. GST)

EDIT: they have coloured belts to match and in the same look as the originals. Late 60's BMC had colour matched belts (red, blue, green etc.) although for a 1970 Mini I think they were back to just using grey or black (to save $$)
