Post subject:  Heater Cable Route

Hi All,

I'm getting towards the end of a 5 year journey restoring a '65 Cooper S and find I've got no record of where the heater and choke cables pass through the firewall. When I run the heater cable through the firewall hole directly behind it (on right in photo) then the cable doesn't seem long enough to reach heater water valve. Could someone please stick their head under their parcel tray and advise which cable goes through which firewall hole?

The heater cable is the passenger side cable and the choke is the drivers side cable.

They should run straight from the switch panel through the bulkhead.

My car has the cables coming out of the 2 outer holes. The hole in between is not used.

How long is your heater cable? It may have been shortened at some point in its life.

The heater cable is listed here with an 80cm outer and 88cm inner. http://www.retrominisltd.co.uk/index.ph ... cts_id=609

There should be another hole below the bulkhead cross member behind the heater between and I think just above the heater brackets. I'll have to check on my 67 S to confirm which but I think it is the heater cable that goes through it - the original felt and carpet piece for the firewall have holes cut so I'm pretty sure it is original. The 3 holes photographed I though took the 2 windscreen washer hoses and the choke?
I'll see if I have a photo of the hole but will check my car.
Cheers

The heater cable goes through the RH side hole in the pic. The original grommets for both the choke and heater cables were a red/orange colour.
I recently replaced the heater cable and it now rattles. After checking old and new cables, the new cable doesn't have a plastic inner liner and hence the rattle.
The windscreen washer tubing doesn't go through any of the bulkhead grommets. It goes behind the bulkhead sound proofing felt to the washer bottle and the washer jets.
IIRC the tubing to the jets goes under the tabs behind the wiper arm boxes that also hold various bits of the wiring loom.
Both pieces of tubing go through the large wiring loom grommet at the base of the speedo housing and then underneath the dash panel to the pump.

Here is a photo of mine showing the 2 washer tubes going down next to the wiring harness.

I must admit I was not sure about the washer tubes and the car is down in the back shed - I was going on memory (which is probably a bad thing as it's not as good as it use to be) so will check the set up on my car - probably should have done that first :(

Just looking at cruiser23's photo I think you can just see the hole I'm referring to below the cross member below where the cable is coming out. I'd mark it on the photo but for some reason I cannot save it to edit?
I'd like to know if this is correct?

I would like to confirm this as well. They must have put all these holes in for a reason. There are not many one owner cars around so i would go with your cars setup.

In case it's needed I can confirm my MK II S has the heater cable through the grommet on the driver's side and the choke on the other side, with the middle hole plugged.

Just checked my 1 owner- me - late 1968 build "S" and the there is a black plug in the hole.
I can't see if there is a corresponding hole on the LHS as there is too much stuff in the way to get a clear view.

There can be a couple of reasons for unused holes in the body.
1/ Alignment holes when the panels are being assembled on jigs etc to aid assembly.
2/ Holes that are common to all panels etc but not used on all models.
eg: RH inner guards have the holes for S brake booster brackets which are not used on non S models and holes for the voltage regulator mounting plastic plugs which are not used on the S as the voltage regulator is mounted in a different position.

My Australian MK1 and my English MK1 both have the choke cable on the drivers side hole and the heater cable on the other side. I believe the hole in the centre below the cross member was used for the choke cable in the Deluxe. Remember they were the same shells.

John. Do the cables run directly through to the holes in front of them? Eg the far left and right holes. Is the third hole between these used for anything?

Oh well next time I'm fiddling with the car I see some cable redoubling happening. Thanks Rod

Thanks for all the replies, I think I may have opened a can of worms. There is an additional hole that can just be seen in the original photo and it is between the heater brackets but much closer to the driver side bracket. I don't know what goes through this hole.
The original heater cable that came with my car, although it was in a box and not on the car, is 740mm outer and 790mm inner. I did buy another cable, as I also thought the original may have been shortened, and it is 810mm/880mm. This should be a better fit but it is no where near the quality of the original. I would like to re-use the original cable parts if possible and would like to know if anyone has successfully had one re-sheathed and where?

GTOGreen,
Yes the cables both run straight through to the left and right holes. As far as I know the third one was not used and had Bostic or the like in it. My English car only has the two holes for the two cables, but of course it is an entirely different shell.
