This is not going well. First venture into something vaguely engine related on the mini (other than changing oil and flushing coolant) and i think I'm beaten. Ordered a slave repair kit as the seal definitely seems gone. But I can't for the life of me get the cylinder out. Can't get the hose off (which nut? - the rounded end one on the hose, the one at the back that looks like a nut going into the slave, or take the hose off further up towards the master). Then can't get the slave itself off. The nut behind the cylinder is impossible to reach, as is the small nut under the slave cylinder on the mounting plate (if I was to remove the whole thing). If I could drive the thing I'd just take it to good old Greig but this one came out of nowhere! |

The end of the hose that connects to the slave cylinder has a round 'banjo' fitting on it that the bolt goes through from the rear in your photo. The bolt is hollow so the fluid goes through it into the cylinder body. You need to undo that bolt to remove the hose. It will have two copper washers on either side of the banjo fitting. The cylinder itself is held on by the two bolts. You will likely need a socket rather than a spanner. 9/16" AF. If you can't get to the banjo bolt on the hose while it is mounted, you might be able to remove the cylinder then bolt it down again at an angle while you undo the banjo bolt. |

Holy moly that was a hideous way to spend an afternoon. Thanks for the tips. Managed to get the bracket off. Only broke two spanners in the process. Found it easiest to take the two large top bolts out, then twist the bracket a little to get better access to the underneath bolt. This is what I've got for my troubles. Does it all look right? Is there anything else sitting in there that I need to get out? Sadly couldn't see a seal spreader which others have mentioned is important

Does it have a very thin plastic piece stuck up against the seal? Like the top one in this photo.

Thanks for the picture. This is all I've goT. The end of the cylinder has a sort of cellophane thin plastic (which seems to be torn a little). But nothing else

That's interesting,, it has a seal half way along the piston ! The two above have a seperate seal and therefore need a seal spreader. |

Yep I'm baffled. Not that I know much but i wasn't expecting that. It's a rover so there's the issue I guess. Also I left the hose hanging from the cylinder and nothing leaked out. The master cylinder reservoir is half full, and I was expecting it to all pour out the hose. Does the fact that there was nothing suggest an issue elsewhere? Yours does not require a seal spreader. It has an o-ring style and not a cup type seal |

Sweet thanks for confirming. The current seal seems fine so I'm not sure why there was a leak. The boot was pretty loose, perhaps that was it. Also the lining of the cylinder definitely looks better after honing down Fingers crossed that was the problem. Something I noticed when I was removing the plunger from the cylinder is that the clutch arm mechanism (circled) only seems to move about 1cm in and out of the clutch. Judging by the wear, it usually moves more, all being well. Is that likely to be an issue resolved with repair of the cylinder? Thanks again! The help and walking through issues is a huge help |

The large rubber is only a dust cover, your leak will of been coming from the small rubber cup on the piston , more than likely the rubber had gone hard or it has a small crack in it . Check which way the seal is fitted to the piston , you will have to remove the old one and replace it with the new one, can be a bit fiddly , you can use an "o"ring pick , or a very small flat bladed screwdriver .When you get the old one off , give the piston a clean , then put a bit of rubber grease or vasoline on it and the rubber, and work the rubber over the piston , back into its seated position . |

Thanks goodie Little bit concerned as I've popped the o ring seal off the piston and it seems as good as new. Not at all hardened and no cracks. Guess it could have shrunk a bit with age. Just hoping the new seal kit sorts the problem. |

It doesn't take much to make it leak , could be some dirt in your fluid has got through and may of upset the seal , make sure everything is nice and clean when you put it back together ,drain your fluid if you think it doesn't look clean enough . |

Thanks for the reassurance, good point. The inside of the cylinder was pretty filthy and looks much better after a good scrub with some 400grit sandpaper. |
