Hi all.

Got in the car today and before i had the key in or started I noticed the tacho sitting on 1500 rpm.

Startup went to 2000.

It is a 1275ls with the standard cluster.

Ideas?

I think it's impossible to guess what the problem is.

10 out of 10 points to Jonnoh .... Tacho works with full 12 volts from Ignition not from stabilizer 10 Volt supply. I wonder why people who are not sure what they are saying still put their Guess in. It confuses those who are trying to fix something themselves and could be potentially damaging. Sorry I had to say it but someone had to. If my comment is not liked please feel free to delete it.

I had a a sticking tacho like that but it was only the needle rubbing on the face. Just had to bend it up a bit to clear.

I think it's mechanical
As in the needle isn't returning to zero
Have to read the question properly

Yes, possibly the movement itself has had it or it's sticking....pull it apart and have a look. If you rotate it quickly the needle should wobble due to inertia, if it appears stuck it probably is.

When you turned the engine off, did it go back to 1500.
Try tapping the gauge with your finger.
My mechanical temp gauge only cools down to 50C, but a gentle tap and it goes all the way back to the stop.

+1. That's what mine does and it's the same era (late '78)
It gets stuck at about 500-1000rpm but then is ok when running. Some times it returns to 0.
I just call it an 'undocumented feature'!

Maybe you should carry out an Expanded Gage (*) R&R study on your speedo Jubblies :?:

Ok so got in the car tonight and gave the tacho a gentle bump on the side. I could hear a spring or something inside twang or bounce a bit and the needle just drifted its way back to zero.

Started her up and hey presto, idle! revs up and down and the needle follows nicely. I reckon it just got itself out of sorts over a speed bump or something.
