Post subject: | What else can go wrong ? No second gear |
Help pretty please. I'm in the wars again. Mini is ready for roadworthy and rego. Went for a burn around my paddock and up and down the court, can't get second gear, everything else is there. Gearbox has been overhauled by a professional. Removed the carbies and extractors, watched the linkages while someone went through the gears, the left remote lever at the back of the box moves up and down ok, can see the gear select lever move through all gears except second, which only moves up a touch, no amount of pulling upwards will get it to second. When pulled, you can feel it sorta wants to go and the gear is half engaged. I don't really want to pull the unit out again. Does anyone have any ideas before I do this. Thanks. |

Are the linkages n right splines? Only needs to be one out to not work, does it select 4th/ reverse easily? |

it could be something as simple as a nut or stone stuck inside the remote housing - I'd take the linkage off the shaft that goes through the diff housing and try moving the gearbox side of the linkage by hand. A long socket on an extension works well for changing gears that way |

Is it a rod change ? Make sure the plate under the selector is around/installed the right way |

Have removed the remote extension housing, nothing out of place, have removed the linkages and changed gears manually with socket/extension as suggested, get all gears but second. I'm convinced it's in the box. Bugger. |

Quote: The little cover under the gear stick..... I presume. As Peterb said. It's the cover on the underside of the the gear shift. However, since you have disconnected the rod change and still have a problem it wont be this. |

Looks like it could need surgery. Somethings not right inside. ![]() There's a few things that could cause it ....inside. Have you tried selecting gears directly using shaft sticking out box? |

Is it a 3 synchro or 4 synchro box? If 3 synchro, if 1st gear has been assembled out of phase on the 1st & 2nd hub the interlock plunger will prevent second gear engaging. I know this from bitter experience! |
