Post subject:  Windscreen Washer Set Up Question

Hi,
I've now reached the point in the restoration of my Deluxe where I need to configure the hoses for the windscreen washers. Unfortunately all of this set up was missing when I bought the car and I couldn't find any photos of the set up anywhere. I even pulled out my parts book and that wasn't much use either.

Last night I had a crack at what I thought was right, but alas it didn't work.
So far I have:
Hose 1, running from the bottle to a 1 way valve, through the firewall to the pump.
Hose 2, running from each water jet to a T piece, then trough the firewall to the pump.
The pump works fine and has a strong action.

Is this set up correct, or have I got it very wrong. Any assistance is appreciated.

Regards,
James.

That is the correct way of plumbing it. Just some ideas which you have probably already checked. The one way valve could be leaking back. The pump could be full if crap or worn and having trouble pushing through the hoses and nossles. An air leak somewhere. Blocked nossles. Wrong size hoses. It does take a while to prime the system from empty.

My car works well and has a valve on the T piece.

It also has something in the lid of the washer bottle but I am not sure if it is a valve or just a joiner. I will have to check my photos

Is it possible to have installed the 1 way valve the wrong way around?

Thanks guys, I'll check the valve again tonight.

It needs two check valves. one in the inlet line and one in the outlet. There are no valves in the pump, just a plunger.

Australian minis only had a 1-way valve on the hose at the bottom of the bottle. The valve has barbs on both ends, so check that it lets water in to the hose but cannot drain back.
We fitted an aftermarket setup recently which wouldn't work - turned out the spring in the valve was too much for the pump pressure.

Hi Bill, Can you confirm if this black T piece on my car is the one with a valve in it?

The black "T" piece in your photo looks like it is a 1-way valve. The basic "T" piece doesn't have the valve housing. I don't think is is original - if that's what you are getting at.

Mini Spares shows GWW515 as similar to the one in your photo (although in white plastic) for 1992 onwards cars and I don't have any knowledge of these.
I think the original Aust. minis had a locally-made valve in the bottle (like M/S GWW504) but listed in Oz as AYD9065. It is what is in my K and S.
I'm sure any of these will work although some might be better at stopping drain-back.
Thanks for the photo - I am assembling my wiring and speedo soon.

My washer bottle has something just inside the cap but I can't make out what it is from the photo. I think it is an inline one way valve. It has a small brown hose inside which changes to a larger green hose coming out. (can't confirm because my car is in storage)

Neither of my minis ('69 & '70) has a valve in the bottle cap between the green and clear PVC hose. But if there isn't a valve at the bottom of the bottle, there's got to be one somewhere else - like the T junction.
I can check with a friend who's got a '69 S in bits.

I have a one way valve in mine and could not get it to work.
I discovered that the valve was stuck (it was brand new) and had to use a lot of pressure to unstick it.
Once unstuck it works fine.

Pretty sure my S is like in the following page with valve in T piece and nothing in bottle. Of course the bottle in the picture hasn't been updated to the correct plastic one.

My 67 mk1 S has a valve on the end of pickup and a plain t-piece. Will need to check my early mk2 and GT as I cannot recall.

I found my valve only worked when it was vertical, so it's just on the top of my bottle. Once that was sorted I had to bleed all the air out.

Are those one way thingamy jiggys that sit in the bottom of the washer bottle available? How about the brittle/ ancient/ cracked plastic locking ring for the plunger on the dash rail?

Cheers
