Hi, I am selling my 'quick rack' because I decided not to be so lazy. Was going to simply change the seals and boots on the existing rack (AYA6001) but of course I pulled it apart and noticed that the outer pinion bearing was slightly worn and pitted, looks like water or grime has been getting in there, so have had to take the rack out complicating everything... So have bought a new pinion bearing, locking ring as well as the boots and seals. Of course this will cost me about half the price of a new one....I hope I do not need new shims. The felt rack bush seems fine but as I have it apart I might as well change the bush as well... However all that I can find is the following bush made from urethane: http://www.classicmotoring.net.au/cmos/ ... cts_id=697 MKO sell something which looks similar; at least it does not seem to be nylon. Has anybody any experience with these in terms of performance and durability? I have a lathe so maybe I can just turn one up out of nylon! Thanks Jon. |

your rebuilt rack will probably last longer than the one you were going to replace it with anyway... I've had a blue bush in mine for years and years and years, rack is great on that quickrack, 'they' say the standard UK racks are 2.7 turns lock to lock, the quickrack is 2.2 - I *think* our Australian racks are 2.4 - can anyone confirm? |

Those lurethane bushes are fine, I have fitted heaps of them. Use 110mL of 140 gear oil, not grease. Stand on LH end to fill before you fit the RH boot. @Simon, the stock Oz rack is 2.3. A UK quickrack is a lot faster than ours, remember their Mk2 on racks have more teeth cut to give tighter turning circle. So at 2.2 turns (would have a bigger pinion) it goes further than ours. |

So at 2.2 turns (would have a bigger pinion) it goes further than ours. ahh, I see - thanks Kev - I didn't know that about the MK2 on cars Turning circle (standard Mk1 saloon) - 9.63 m Turning circle (Mk2-on saloon) - 8.55 m so the quickrack would be handy for motorkhanas... maybe a little scary on the freeway though |

OK one other thing, what is the torque setting for the locknut? The manual says 'tighten to the recommended torque' (it would be easier if they just stated what it is!) but this doesn't seem be listed in the front of the book?! Jon |

I made a C spanner for the ball nut and use a pipe wrench on the locknut. I would guess it about 25 ft/lb. Too much will deform the side of the locknut. Back ball nut off 1/12 of a turn from tight, before locking up. |

Thanks Dr Mini. I found vice grips made the locknut tight so didn't really trust it; I'll see if I can borrow a spanner from a mechanic friend... I have done a google and have found 35-40lbft which does sound quite tight. Jon |
