Just fitting the gearbox to the motor (finally) and wanted to make sure I had the right gasket.
As you can see from the photo, the gasket covers the O ring. Is this correct or should the hole in the gasket be bigger to allow for the o ring to meet directly with the block?

I'm with Lillee
The paper gasket is to stop oil leaking between the block and gearbox. The O Ring is to stop oil leaking in the same place but at 80 psi.
I'd have a clean smooth surfaces for the O Ring to seal on.
Just my opinion :D

Gasket has always covered the o-ring by design. This one is badly cut or has shrunk. Trim it or fit a better gasket.

The gasket on the other side isn't cut to the same shape, is this normal or should I ditch the pair and buy a new set?

they can't/shouldn't be the same shape - the gaskets you have are correct

Ditto.
But don't forget to fit the O-ring, guaranteed to suck air without it.

There are 2 types of front edge gasket for the engine /gearbox face.(opposite side to the O ring)
One for 1275 motors and the other, shown in the pic, is for a small block - 1098,998, 850 etc.
If you use the small block gasket on a 1275 the rods hit the paper gasket and break off bits which can then get into the oil system.
The 1275 gasket follows the contours of the gearbox edges and doesn't over lap into the gearbox inner area.

Now that I have just done this tonight, you don't need to cut the gasket. If you invert he motor and place the gearbox onto the block, the O ring seals onto the gasket with block along with gasket sealant that you use.
