It depends on the test.
`Ping' test costs you nothing. stand on one end on concrete and strike the upper web with a spanner. Turn crank upside down and repeat.
If cracked it will sound flat, whereas a prolonged high pitched ring means (usually) it's good. Note the 2 sprocket shims can damp the sound, I remove them and the crank key first.

Dyecheck- I have a kit here, and do them for $20 if local.
Black light fluorescent- St George Cranks near me charge $80.
Magnaflux- I did this many years ago for nix at work, no idea of pricing now. Ring around welding inspection services.

I've had a crank 'ping' test and sound ok before but upon getting a proper crack test, it had a very fine crack in it. Ping test is cheap though.........

I recently sold a couple of crankshafts for a 351W and cost me $120 each for the magnaflux testing here in Toowoomba. Mini would be cheaper due to size but it is a ballpark figure for comparison.

If I sell a crank,or a head, I usually state if it is defective, I just refund the cost of the head plus postage...peace of mind always will prevail and I get all my cranks tested irrespective of condition. I recently bought a new 351w crank and had a hairline crack in the centre web so buying new sometimes doesn't guarantee it is not faulty. Thankfully the business sent me another out pre tested and is perfect plus paid all return and re delivery costs.

Sorry it isn't mini related but have a v8 project on the trot here also...mini for daily and fun and the XD ute for scaring people.

I think i will do a ping test and list on ebay as just taken from engine sutting for 15yrs ( which they will be), i will probably start at 50$ so not worth investing 100$ into it :-) Will say passed ping test if it does and my own visual, but no garuntee :-)

I had a dog that used to be great at it. Every lady he came across he use to sniff her for cracks.

Thanks for the info on the head and crank. I resolve not to bid. Really !, do you want to risk a bad rating on ebay. Bye bye customers.

get them tested and pass the cost onto the customer, that's what I do. Supply and invoice if they're skeptical. If you do this then it circumvents most of the hassle of posting back and forth, which is usually the main aggrevation. It's really not hard to do and everyone wins.

Also a known good crank will sell quicker and for more money than an unknown.

How much would a tested with invoice 1100 crank go for ( not reground)? I was assuming id be over capitalising?

FYI I had a couple of cranks for sale, I had them on here and also on facebook groups and listed very genuinely. I had no interest at all, and ended up giving all of them away (minus the primary gears).

I also bought a second hand 1100 crank, which had been crack tested, checked and reground and it was about $200.

Bear in mind these days a regrind is around $180-200. So if it's already reground (or a mint original) it's worth more than a worn one.

Just doesnt make sense to pay 200 for a regrind, 100 for crack test when they are only selling for $200?
