Post subject:  Disc Brake Conversion - new steering arms???
Have purchased: http://www.minispares.com/product/Class ... 0to%20shop

Will be built and fitted to a 1967 mini deluxe and have had mixed opinions on whether or not steering arms needs to be replaced with cooper s ones? Can someone give me a definitive answer?

Have read the HOW TO and understand that it says it is best to keep original steering arms... smarter, more knowledge people than me have told me otherwise.

Confused????

I fitted a 7.5" disc setup to a clubman a few months back and used the standard steering arms.

The only extras I had to buy were front brake hoses, 5/8" rear wheel cylinders, extra ball joint shims and grease nipples.

Have a look at this thread. viewtopic.php?f=2&t=88398 You may already have the fatter steering arms fitted.

The steering arms should match your rack. Use your current ones. English and Australian cars had different length racks, and therefore different arms too.

67 Deluxe arms are thick, the same as a Cooper S. It's the early cars here that got thin ones (850 and maybe Cooper).

Thanks for the advice guys - it appears more people leave their current steering arms in place to do the conversion. Any other tips and advice greatly welcomed!

I've always used ones sold by Mini suppliers as fit for the job. I should be right, yeah?

Yeah not all are made the same though, ask Dr Mini what happens when they let a pad go while you're driving along :shock:

If they are a little too easy to bend then beware

They used to come with real 1/8" split pins made from Oz (or UK) steel. Near impossible to buy these now.
Nowadays, if they have pins in the box they are 3mm rubbish soft Chinese steel you can bend with your fingers. :evil:

I had the misfortune of both break/bend/wear through when driving in traffic, the LH inner pad ejected onto the road and I had NO brakes. Good thing the handbrake still worked.

I now use 2 pieces of 1/8" (3.2mm) welding electrode 80mm long, with the ends bent over.

Cheers for all of the tips guys - I've added them to my checklist as I work through the process of the conversion!
