Hey everyone my names nick I bought my first mini 2 weeks ago it's a 74 clubman everything was fine until I drove it the other night and it started stalling on me it started back up every time I thought it might of been doing this because it was a rather cold night I went to drive it last night and it stared first go but when I went to take off it wouldn't go into gear so I turned it off and tryed changing gears with the engine off and it went into every gear no worries if Anyone can offer some friendly advice it would be wound be greatly appreciated |

The first problem may need more info. The second problem sounds like clutch release isn't working. Does the clutch pedal feel soft and doey? What happens if you try starting it whilst in gear, foot on clutch? Does it lerch or try to drive? If the clutch doesnt fully release the syncro's on gears stop it going in. If this is the case, it'll probably crunch when trying to select reverse. |

Pull the plugs and see what they look like...shout the car a new set so that you know where you stand? Check the gaps and clean off any oil with a dry cloth first. Same, same for the points...they are probably all closed up with a centre "finger" making contact before anything else... BUT don't go changing things willy-nilly...you need to find out where the problem is... Good luck... |

Hi Nick. As far as the stalling goes, Try removing the fuel cap and see if this solves the problem. If it does you've got a blockage (or kink) in the breather pipe. As Peterb said it sounds like the clutch isn't releasing properly. To test this, put it in gear. Press the clutch pedal to the floor. turn the engine over. If you move forward it's either air in the system, Master cylinder or slave cylinder. Try bleeding the clutch first and go from there. |

Thanks everyone for all your advice I had a play around with the throw out stop and the adjustable stop and managed to get it into gear with the engine running and went for a drive but it now feels like the clutch is slipping in third and forth |

^^ what he said You've adjusted the little 7/16" head bolt out too far. The proper way to adjust it is to take the spring off and pull on the arm with your hand to make about .020" (.5mm) gap between the bolt and the arm. If you've adjusted the bolt so that it's constantly putting pressure on the arm then your thrust bearing will wear out VERY QUICKLY, which is probably what you've done If you can't bleed any more air out of it, and you can't adjust the bolt and arm to have the correct gap, then there is wear in the system that's all adding up to mean the correct adjustment can't move the clutch far enough to disengage... wear in the pin that connects the pedal to the MC piston, wear in the hole for the pin, wear in the slave cylinder pushrod, wear in the slave cylinder pushrod pin, wear in the arm pin hole, wear in the arm ball end, wear in the throwout bearing carrier.... it all adds up |
