Post subject:  Can you modify non Cooper diff side covers for hardy units

Hi I was wondering if you could modify non hardy spicer gearbox diff covers to fit the Hardie Spicer yokes

I recall that some of the non cooper S covers where a solid casting which may have been from a OZ gearbox and therefore there is enough material to machine out.

Has any one done this.

Out of stock at mini spares and $$$ for what they are

The one on the right here is thicker around the oil seal and can apparently be opened up for the Hardy Spicer couplings

Kiwi,
The thick Oz ones machine out fine, but the S bushes are exxy (S tax). Send me a pm if you want a couple of covers, machined or not.

Thanks Kevin. I am sure I have a pair somewhere and some automatic side covers I can rob the bushes from.

I will get in touch if i get stuck.

Cheers

All the torque is transmitted through there, if you turn it down 1/8" on diameter you are weakening it severely.
The splines are bigger than on lesser Minis, that is why the outside diameter is increased.

re the bushes- they wear, usually need replacement on a proper gearbox rebuild. If a sloppy fit, the seals leak sooner.
I would fit new bushes, bugger the expense. :)

Years ago there were Hardy Spicer style drive flanges sold to bolt onto rubber U/J output shafts. Dunno who made them, but I have seen several sets.

the bushes are another out of stock item.

So if i turn out the standard ones will an S seal fit into a non S side cover or do i need a special seal.

Both the bush and seal housing bores are enlarged by 0.125" diameter. Look like a S cover when done. :)

S bushes are available, try Karcraft, Minisport Oz or Classic Motoring. I just bought 2.

Edit need to bore bush to size after fitting. They are about 0.007" undersize.

If you have the automatic gearbox output covers for the diff, you don't need to rob the bushes from them - you have everything already to fit Hardy-Spicer universals as they used them too. Or have I missed something?

I'd love to see this kit as it sounds like what I've been thinking about making...

It was back in the 70s, John Smidt would probably remember them.
(Edit) may have been KG Engineering?
