[*]hi all what sort of car do you use for towing a mini? What's your setup.

Stick it on a trailer would be the obvious choice...lol

An A frame attached to the front subframe bolts is quite adequate... although I think somewhat illegal in Oz.

Big box trailer and anything bigger than a 4 cylinder Camry is all you need. Tilt trailer makes it easier.

Morris 1100 and a bit of Telecom Rope NOT .!!!! Trailer or tilt truck. safer and less hassle.

Early Land Rover Discovery (3.5 V8 Auto) because I'm a sucker for old British junk. My trailer is single axle, cable braked and has no springs (although friends, family and myself have done many thousands of km's towing Minis and other small cars with it, I don't necessarily recommend a trailer with no springs). I am careful with where I position the Mini on the trailer, and I tie it down over the rear wheels and to the front tie rods.

I've towed my Mini over 20,000 kms now in an enclosed 11 X 5 trailer, strapping each wheel down so the mini rides on it's own suspension. Single axle, 13" wheels, 8 ply light truck tyres at 50 PSI, sits on 110 kph just fine behind a Mercedes four cylinder diesel Vito van. Worst tow vehicle on the same trailer was a Holden Commodore Ute because the wind drag was incredible, whereas behind the van, it is in the slipstream, & you don't even notice it. (A Landcruiser would have a similar drag benefit?).
Enclose the trailer to protect the Mini from stone chips off the tow vehicle.
If I built another trailer, it would be dual axle because the single axle suspension does bottom out on some rural roads...
That's my two cents worth!

I've towed with many variations.

Proper dual axle with rocker suspension is nice if you can get it, but a well setup single axle is okay when loaded correctly.

These were all from Adelaide To Hay.

EF falcon XR6 wagon was positively great.
Later model Magna VRX was okay, but rear suspension VERY soft. Made for a nervous, twitchy drive.
GU patrol was easy, but being a petrol jobbie was a bit thirsty.
VW Jetta (manual, 2.0 petrol) was good, economy was good too. Still an easy drive. Impressively capable for a mid-size car.
BT50 (current 3.2 5cyl, manual) was simply fantastic on the most recent trip.

I have a 12x6 box trailer with winch, ramps, front and rear gates, tiedown hooks, dual axle with rocker Springs, and electric brakes - I like it because it is dual purpose. Most recently towed my minis and midget with an auto Mitsubishi 380 VRX did a great job but a bit thirsty and interestingly got better economy with the car in the trailer than without - I think the cars reduced the drag? Will be using this setup when I head down to Bathurst this year.

Have to agree with ianscampbell's post regarding the need for stone chip prevention. If you don't wish to go all the way with a fully enclosed trailer, a shroud at the front also works well. The trailer illustrated below works just as well with a Mini as the Sprite. It's a fully floored single axle tilt trailer that doubles as a box trailer with removable sides and hinged front and rear tailgates when not carrying a car.
Best tow vehicle so far is my 3L turbo diesel Ranger twin cab ute - effortless torque and great economy.
