How many people still have all wheel drum brakes and are you happy with their performance?

Yes, fitted larger 1" bore front wheel cylinders and they stop more than well enough for a road car.

That's good to hear. I was looking at the mintex shoes and the 1" bore wheel cylinders instead on paying the cost of the cooper S set up.

The trick with the drums is to start with new everything and adjust & bleed every year.

I need to build the brakes from scratch. Is there any benefit from fitting braided brake hoses over rubber hoses?

Standard hose is all you need for a road car.

Be aware mounting holes for 1" cylinders are deliberately different to 15/16" ones. You need to file them to fit.

Mine are fine, I have no problem even on long downhill runs.

As mentioned above, the key is having them adjusted properly. It makes a big difference to the pedal height and feel.

Then you obviously drive conservatively..... I drove an 850 for years and though the brakes were fine..until I switched to discs.

Drums will stop every bit as well as discs ..once or maybe twice... Why do you think Jaguar (and BMC) went to discs in the first place... The Laws of Physics apply ..as the fluid heats up the brakes go away.. and discs are better at getting rid of the heat..

Wheel cylinder size does nothing except change the ratio of pedal to pad pressures.. much like a booster. The bigger the slave bore the lower the pedal pressure for the same braking effect - at the expense of pedal travel.

I got mine from Minisport in Adelaide. As the Doc said be prepared to file a bit to make them fit.
I rebuilt my brakes completely last year. Hoses, had my 1 inch cylinders resleeved in stainless, rebuilt the master cylinder. My shoes and drums were good still. My brakes are now fantastic. Changing the fluid regularly helps too.

My mini when I bought it came with 4 spaced drums and the longer wheel studs so I can run the Cooper S wheel arches or no flares with the standard drums. I just need to get all the bits and pieces for the drum brakes.

The 1" cylinders where slightly tight in the backplate, but went in fine without any modification.

What are some of the better shoes to use?
