I see that 165/70 x 10 Dunlop Aquajets are advertised as available in Australia. Can anyone out there advise how these compare with 165/70 x 10 Yokohama A008's and which is the wider tyre. Thanks. |

Well if they are made like originally with textile belt and crappy rubber they wouldn't see which way A008s went. Btw back then they were only available in 145-10. I had them on my Mini, not for long. As for width, wider is not necessarily better. For example Falken FK07E are wider than both A008 and A032R but grip is worse. |

Thanks Doc. Not actually looking for more width, on the contrary want them to fit under the guards without flares and on Cooper S standard steel wheels. I do know that the 165 Yokies are narrower than the Kumoh's. Just saw these 165 Dunlops advertised at Antique Tyres Australia and wondered on the width spec. I do agree that the Yokies are the yardstick. |

I'm running Aquajets. Can't complain about the grip.... looks great! ( please bear in mind we are in drought and its doesn't rain in country Qld so can not vouch for wet weather) |

The Yokohama's are very good in my experience. Mine took an absolute caning in East Timor and Indonesia let alone driving Melb-Darwin. Very good tyre and loads of grip..... |

Yokohama A008's cannot be faulted. Only bettered by Yokohama A032R's which last 1/4 of the miles (if you're careful) |

 165s on 6" Minilites... IMHO A-Jets are wet weather tyres; where they work extremely well - until they get past half worn.... In the day the rubber was soft ..and with the heavilly siped tread they were (IMHO) a bit squirrely in the dry. Great when it was p*&(ng dpwn... The new ones are very sensitive to tyre pressures. Once we had that sorted, they worked quite well. Cheers, Ian |

Thanks guys, looks like it's going to be Yokies. Gotta make up my mind about the 165's on Cooper S steel rims fitting under the guards without flares. Don't really want to use 145's. I do have a set of michmatch 145's in michelin and kumoh. Maybe put them on for the roadworthy, then switch to the 165's. By the way, that's a nice set of wheels Ian. Nice blue. |

Depending how picky the examiners are, 165 008s on S rims will fit under non flaired arches... with juuussst a smidge of sidewall poking out.  Yes, 8982 is a interesting toy. Cheers, Ian |

165 008s on S wheels, no flares. A bit of side wall pokes out, but not so you would notice. I've been left alone by the law so far, but the car doesn't get out much these days. Cheers Brian |

Practical Classics magazine December 2006 included a small tyre test. They did only two tests with five types of tyre at MIRA with an English MK2 Cooper S. I assume the scope of the test was limited to save the car. There are heaps of variables, but this might give a general indication of relative performance. All tyres are labelled 165/70R10 except the Camac cross ply 520-10. Wet braking from 40mph Dunlop D93J: 82.7 ft in 3.02 sec. Yokohama A008: 88.9 ft in 3.16 sec. Dunlop Aquajet: 97.8 ft in 3.30 sec. Falken FK07: 104.1 ft in 3.44 sec. Camac crossply: 111.2 ft in 3.86 sec. Wet handling circuit Dunlop D93J: 19.0 sec with max 46.2 mph. Yokohama A008: 19.6 sec with max 45.0 mph. Dunlop Aquajet: 20.2 sec with max 43.3 mph. Falken FK07: 20.6 sec with max 42.6 mph. Camac crossply: 22.4 sec with max 39.7 mph. Their subjective comments were that the crossply, with by far the least grip, was the smoothest and most predictable at the limit. So the fastest isn't necessarily the most fun, depending on who you are and how you use your car. |

I agree with that I reckon the Dunlops are much better than the 008 s and as for the Falkans well driving in the rain last saturday , without trying , all they did was wheelspin through 1st and 2nd when getting away from the lights tippy toe stuff ! |

Re traction problems with Falkens I also found them useless in the wet, and not much better in the dry. But they do last 'forever' compared to the others. |

Useless??? You should be old enough Kev to remember the old Michy Zs...  But they were a step up from No Name radial retreads ... but they were better than crossplies.Spend what you want... Cheers, Ian |

Anyone remember the 10" Pirelli Cinturato's? They were considered the Mini tyre of choice for fast road use back in the 1960's and 70's. |
